American History X
Review of American History X (Wide Screen) by jaygami1986

Advantages: Great plot, superb characters and a theme that needed to be discussed
Disadvantages: violent

...born in London, 1952. Unfortunately American History X was his only feature film, which to me was a real shame is this film really bought out the best in the director, but he stuck around directing music videos and continued doing lower key documentaries and so on. But his biggest accolade was this film. Basic Plot Outline (Well its actually quite complicated) Ok well ill try my best to explain the general plot of the story, without having to give ...
...Ok so the film starts of in the early 90's following the character of Derek Vinyard (Norton), a young smart and gifted kid who had so much potential in life. However, Derek is reluctantly drawn into the movement of Neo Naziism, after a group of black gang members killed his father. During Derek's childhood, he was subjected to the racist's views his fathers expressed about black, Jewish and Mexican people. Thus the mentality was built up inside him ... Read review

If The Cap Fits...
Review of The Elephant Man DVD by zyxwv

Advantages: Moving, well acted and directed .
Disadvantages: Better for an edit, slightly too long. Unavoidably sombre.

(Sorry for the flippant title - couldn't resist) INTRODUCTORY DETAILS Direction.. ..David Lynch Genre... ..Drama Rating.. ..PG (fair) Format.. ..Widescreen, Black and White Production.. ..1980 Length.. ..118 minutes 'John Merrick'.. ..John Hurt 'Dr Frederick Treves'.. ..Anthony Hopkins SYNOPSIS With a screenplay adapted from the books by Dr Frederick Treves and Ashley Montague, 'The Elephant Man' takes up the story of John Merrick in his ...
...taken a savage beating at the hands of the showman. So the story is set for the main theme of the film as from here on Merrick is taken under Treves' wing and housed in private lodgings at the hospital where the latter is a respected physician. Lynch's film follows Merrick's life as Treves attempts to help 'the elephant man' both with his medical condition and by introducing him to polite society. Thus a moving story comprised of both joy and sadness ... Read review

No duel between history and fiction.
Review of Enemy At The Gates DVD by Quinion

Advantages: An absorbing plot of historical significance.
Disadvantages: Scarcely the most cheerful of films - but of course that isn't the intention.

...commercial viability. Jean-Jacques Annaud's Enemy at the Gates, however, finds a delightful compromise between these two spheres of fact and fiction, one which ought be noted by all prospective "historic" directors. What EATG offers is a wholesome and captivating adaptation of a supposedly true war story, yet the background horrors of the struggle for Stalingrad are as depressingly accurate a depiction of wartime's hellish nature as one will ever ...
...taken the vast majority of Europe under its control. Stalingrad is the next in line for the systematic submission to the Third Reich, and should it be taken there seems little hope left for Stalin and his people. This city is a major tool for propaganda in title alone - as commander Nikita Khrushchev states bluntly, it "bears the name of the boss." It is this issue of propaganda that proves so crucial a concept however. Political officer Danilov ... Read review

Bean 'n Gone
Review of Jack And The Beanstalk - The Real Story DVD by Borg

Advantages: Disc would make a nice Frisbee
Disadvantages: Too many to count.

...and since this, I wonder? Jack (Costello) gets a job babysitting a young prodigy-cum-brat, and Abbott plays his manager. The prodigy-cum-brat is basically a… well… brat. In an attempt to settle the boy down, Jack reads the story of Jack and the Beanstalk. We leave their black and white world and, very ‘Wizard of Oz’ like, we appear in a colourful world where Jack lives with his mother. The story is pretty much the fairy tale story that everyone ...
...the gist? However, when Jack starts to climb the beanstalk, along with Abbott – who plays a butcher (Jack swapped his cow for the beans with the butcher – was basically conned, but the giant takes the cow and Abbott wants it back; plus the giant has a goose that lays golden eggs… added incentive for Abbott), the village below bursts into song. This surprised me somewhat as I did not expect that. A bit of ‘filling in,’ I suspected at the time. But ... Read review
