Who's the victim?
Advantages: Gripping storyline Disadvantages: Acting fairly mediocre
Introduction
A Place in the Sun, directed by George Stevens, is a strangely gripping film that leaves you not sure whether to feel sorry for the main character or not. With names like Elizabeth Taylor, Montgomery Clift and Shelley Winters in the three main roles, it is not surprising that the film has attracted a lot of attention over the years, although I think that it is the strong storyline and cinematography, rather than the acting that stands ... ...in 1975. He came from a family connected to the movies - his father was a bit actor in Citizen Kane, his brother was a drama critic and his sister became a screenwriter. George first became a cameraman and moved his way up to director. His most well-known films include Swing Time (Astaire and Rogers 1936), Gunga Din (1939), Woman of the Year (1942), A Place in the Sun (1951) and Shane (1953).

Worthwhile heartfelt movie but not the greatest
Advantages: Ambitious and honest-feeling attempt to do justice to the Christ Disadvantages: It doesn't quite work
...Summary
Overall, as a story, the greatest ever told, the movie lacks dramatic punch and an emotional core. As an epic retelling of historical events it lacks accuracy and fails to convey the import of the source accounts. Despite these shortcomings, however, this is still a highly watchable movie thanks mainly to Max Von Sydow.
Whether you should watch it or not probably depends on whether you want to compare it to your knowledge of the scriptural ... ...teaser

Fly fishing and drinking in Montana
Advantages: Gentle story, well-filmed Disadvantages: Goes on for too long
...drinks and womanizes and gets a job as a fishing reporter. Then Norman falls in love with the beautiful Jessie. All seems to be going well, for Norman, but Paul is falling into more and more debt from gambling and it seems that he will never be able to find a way out. Is it because he feels he is in his brother's shadow? Will he ever be able to set himself on the straight and narrow? Norman is played by Craig Sheffer, an actor I don't think I have ... ...UK. As Norman, he gives a more than creditable performance, although it has to be said that Norman isn't the most exciting of characters. He is likeable though and the love he clearly has for his brother is touching. I much prefer Brad Pitt as Paul Maclean though. Pitt was still very young at this point (the film was made in 1992), and he looks amazing - but it is his bad boy characters that is so attractive. There is obviously a lot more going on ...

Shane Meadows - the Euro Star of directing!
Advantages: Solid short Disadvantages: Not Meadows best
...director Shane Meadows returns with Somers Town, this a little treat from his backers who have given him some money to indulge in his passion - short films, Somers Town just 68 minutes long. Originally this commission was supposed to be a publicity film for the new Eurostar service from the refurbished St Pancreas Station and they wanted Meadows to do some sort of infomercial. But he didn't fancy making shorts about kids and families waving on trains ... ...around the station development, the Somers Town deal was struck and a completely new style of commercial film collaboration was invented. Meadows is a unique director and this is a unique experiment. If this was The Truman Show then he is the product and this is the placement. The unassuming and very down-to-earth Meadows has made over 100 'shorts' in his life and I think it's fair to say the most autobiographical director out there, his home town ...
