When 'The Aviator', directed by Martin Scorsese, was fist released in 2004 I quite fancied watching it but just never got round to doing so. While ordering some books from Amazon I looked up the DVD and as it was only £1, I added it to my order. In retrospect - I'm glad that it was only £1!! The story follows around twenty tears in the life of the infamous, eccentric billionaire Howard Hughes from his making of his epic ...

CASINO is the Best Gangster film ever made
Advantages: Makes you glad YOU didn't live there then! Disadvantages: nothing really
Bought this on video (but now have it on DVD) when it first came out (in the early 90's) because I have always thought Scorcese is a great director and de Niro a marvellous actor and ever since I periodically watch it.
In my opinion this is the BEST gangster film ever made and it's based on the truth. There again, Scorcese is the BEST Director of this film genre. 'GOODFELLAS' is another great film directed by him, based also on a true story - actually ... ...in the last part of this film was taking place, so it is true!
Robert de Niro & Joe Pesci are ideally paired and the film comes alive with their dialogue, particularly when they remember 'back home, years ago'.
Scorcese's use of contemporary music is outstanding particularly when the action is suspended as a 'still' and appropriate music is played - just mesmerising.
Sharon Stone is also excellent as the glamorous hooker who reluctantly.marries ...

One of the most beautifully brutal films of all time.
Advantages: Acting is amazing, especially De Niro and the whole thing looks gorgeous. Disadvantages: Some may be put off by the violence or the lack of a character to root for.
This film is hailed as a modern classic and rightly so. It's an unashamedly brutal no-holds-barred study of a vicious foul-tempered, arrogant man. Yet through Scorsese and De Niro's masterful balance we see just a truly lost individual. There is no attempt at making LaMotta likeable or even apologetic for his actions. Just pitifully human. De Niro is exceptionally good and the film was clearly a labour of love for the actor. Giving the opportunity ... ...entire film with a fearless, risk taking performance. Be it the professional standard he reached as a boxer himself in training to the mass of weight he piled on for the latter scenes. De Niro at this stage in his career certainly never took the easy way out and the film benefits from having one of cinema's greatest actors at the top of his game. This is not to say that the film is all DeNiro, Cathy Moriarty is beautifully restrained as LaMotta's ...

The little men in Little Italy
Advantages: Warm and realistic, as well as having one of De Niro's best performances Disadvantages: Some might not like the lack of a solid plot
Mean Streets (1973) was the first major project that Martin Scorsese both wrote and directed for widespread distribution. As with his student films, he tried to recreate the familiar sights, sounds and colourful personalities of New York's Little Italy, the neighbourhood Scorsese grew up in. It's a film full of the youthful exuberance of a young director given a chance to prove himself, and while it lacks the polished, neat storytelling of later ... ...Admittedly, I came to Mean Streets thinking it would be a gangster movie, in the vein of Scorsese's most enduring 90s films such as Goodfellas and Casino, all top mafia gansters dodging bullets and trying to move up in the company - involving and often shocking motion pictures, but focusing on characters who need to exaggerate themselves in order to survive. I was surprised to find that at the heart of Mean Streets is its flawed and very human characters, ...

A sequel worth watching!!!
Advantages: Fantastically acted, great style and charisma about the film Disadvantages: None of note
...'The Hustler originally released in the early sixties then this basically is a continuation from that, for those of you that havent it is as the film title would suggest about a Fast but brilliant pool hustler that goes round making money etc by hustling rich folk and winning competitions.
The main character in the original Hustler movie Fast Eddie Felzon is now a middle aged man who has pretty much finished in the world of pool but he one day comes ... ...at a younger age. The problem is the young kid has no control, he makes it very obvious when he is hustling and doesn;t know how to allow a few games to be lost before winning for the bigger stake, He just keeps winning as he hates losing.
The young kid who is in this film played by a very young Tom Cruise is late teens early 20's sort of age and Fast Eddie (Paul Newman) decides to get him onside and teach him how to hustle like a pro.
Enough about ...
