A Jack Nicholson Masterpiece
Advantages: Superb acting, superb direction Disadvantages: Not for action lovers
...that time disappears and, when the film is over, you just can’t get its atmosphere out of your head. That’s what happened to me with The Pledge, a masterful piece of film-making starring Jack Nicholson and directed by Sean Penn.
At first it appears to be a standard police thriller, but after 20 minutes or so you realize that it’s actually much, much more…
The Plot

Jerry Black (Jack Nicholson) is a retiring policeman in bleak, wintry ... ...enjoying, as the man is clearly at odds with the concept of retirement) his retirement surprise party, a young boy out in the snowy mountains stumbles across the body of a mutilated and sexually assaulted child, and sees an American Indian man fleeing the scene.
The call from headquarters comes through to the party, and Nicholson, having six hours to officially go before his retirement begins, seizes the chance to get involved in one last case.

Bullet, Drugs, Gangs & Tupac
Advantages: Tupac Shakur Disadvantages: Not For Everyone, Quite Slow
I first bought Bullet and watched this film on VHS around 10 years ago. Being a Tupac Shakur fan also purchased it on DVD about 2 years ago.
Bullet is a film about the streets, gangs and diminished 'victory'. Mickey Rourke is the main character in the movie and goes by the name Bullet, a ex convict straight out of prison. Bullet had dreams of becoming a baseball player and make it big time. He had a number of scholarships and his father was very ... ...dream diminished. As soon as Bullet gets out of prison he gets in trouble. By messing around with the new drug dealer Tupac Shakur who goes by the name of Tank. Tank is the new drug dealer running the streets which Bullet isnt happy about.
That is were Bullet starts and throughout the movie Bullet is trying to regain what he once was instead of bettering himself. All hell breaks loose, drugs and gangs want take over and Tank wants Bullet out or ...

"It's Anything Can Happen Day!"

Rourkes Drift
Advantages: Great lead turn Disadvantages: Wrestling in general.
...come club. He was paying the bongo drums and smoking a cigarette that didn't look like normal ones (could have been menthol!). I said hi and shook his hand, complimenting him on Angel Heart and asked if he still had the stunning Lisa Bonnets number, which, in his drunken state and mock Lord of the Manor English accent, bizarrely produced (which I wasn't brave enough to ring!). He then continued banging the drums with a pleasant smile on his face ... ...until his head plopped on the said bongo and he fell asleep, but still smoking that cigarette. I think it's fair to say Mickey has lived the life. They say you get the face you deserve at 40, a face that was punched fairly heavily in the 90s as he turned his back on Hollywood and went on to be a professional fighter for a spell, and unbeaten in 8 fights no less. Well he is New York Irish American after all, one that wears an IRA tattoo and gave to ...

Surprisingly enjoyable two hours
Advantages: Engaging story, excellent performances throughout Disadvantages: At times a little too sentimental
...the extremely variable quality of john Grisham adaptations, I approached this film with some trepidation. Nevertheless, I was pleasantly surprised to find the film to be engaging and an at times amusing rendition of the novel.
Matt Damon is excellent as the newly-qualified lawyer who signs on with a firm of cowboy operators, amongst whom Danny Devito shines as the firm's 'accident hander' The crux of the plot is very formulaic - the 'good guy' takes ... ...out for a leukaemia victim. although sometimes the predictability of the script can irk, I was gripped throughout, a state of affairs which the rather predictable ending did nothing to alleviate.
Full marks to the performers and the script - writer for a film, which is by no means a classic, but thoroughly worth renting or purchasing if reduced. ...
