Great Expectations - The Book
My recollection of the book 'Great Expectations' (by Charles Dickens if there is anyone who doesn't know!) is somewhat hazy, what with GCSEs being 11 years ago and not really paying attention to the book at the time - to be honest I'm not really a fan of Dickens, at least I wasn't at 15. Emma - the annoying matchmaker
Advantages: Great costumes and storyline.
Disadvantages: Is Emma meant to be annoying?
...read all the more! Emma is set in the countryside and it is the 1800s, Emma is a busybody who tries to pair up her friends with men, but it always ends in disaster. As she continues to make a mess of her friends love lives she slowly begins to fall for her widowed brother-in-law.
Emma is played by Gwyneth Paltrow and it is wonderfully done, although I felt that Emma was a bit annoying.
I also loved the costumes, they looked very authentic and beautiful.

Toby Jones is...Truman Capote
Advantages: Great acting, direction, story
Disadvantages: We've heard it before

Nice but predictable
Advantages: heartwarming, nice music
Disadvantages: ordinary and predictable
The story goes like this: Ben Affleck is Buddy, who meets Greg (Tony Goldwyn) at the airport when their flights are delayed. After meeting a woman in the bar, Buddy gives Greg his plane ticket so he can get home to his wife and kids. The plane crashes and Buddy feels responsible for Greg's death. He looks up Greg's widow Abby (Gwyneth Paltrow) to make sure she's okay, and ends up falling in love with her. But of course he doesn't let on who he is, ...
...inevitably finds out.
The film is mostly about the Ben Affleck character's maturing and learning to be responsible. Both the lead characters lie through their teeth for most of the film so by the time you get to the end, the fact that Buddy lied about who he was doesn't matter that much anymore and it's difficult to feel sorry for anyone except the kids.
The story is very predictable but the film is okay. There are some nice characters. The two ...

There's no such thing as poets anymore
Advantages: Nice story

Overall I thought that the direction of this film was satisfactory, not amazing and certainly not terrible but somewhere in the middle. I think the transition between book and film may have lowered the overall intensity of this story. So much has been crammed ...
