The life of our Lord
Advantages: Fantastic acting, direction, location Disadvantages: None at all
...serialisation of Franco Zeffirelli's epic Jesus of Nazareth.
When Dave asked me if there were any DVD's that I would like as part of my Christmas present I said that I would like the DVD of Jesus of Nazareth so that I could watch it again whenever I wanted to.
The one that Dave got for me was the Special Edition DVD in a black metal case with a picture of the face of Jesus (Robert Powell) on the front.
The DVD set consists of two discs each split ... ...follows:
Robert Powell ... Jesus Christ Anne Bancroft ... Mary Magdalene Ernest Borgnine ... The Centurion Claudia Cardinale ... The Adulteress Valentina Cortese ... Herodias James Farentino ... Simon Peter James Earl Jones ... Balthazar Stacy Keach ... Barabbas Tony Lo Bianco ... Quintilius James Mason ... Joseph of Arimathea Ian McShane ... Judas Iscariot Laurence Olivier ... Nicodemus Donald Pleasence ... Melchior Christopher Plummer ... Herod ...

Last Night I dreamt I went to Manderley Again
Advantages: A fantastic film full of drama, suspense and brilliant acting and writing Disadvantages: None at all
...Max is not pining for Rebecca and the only person who had anything good to say about her was the virulent Mrs Danvers, so the new Mrs De Winter regains her confidence and decides to rebuild Manderley in a blaze of glory regaining her self respect and her husband's love. Cast: Laurence Olivier George Fortescue Maximilian 'Maxim' de Winter Joan Fontaine ... The Second Mrs. de Winter George Sanders Jack Favell Judith Anderson Mrs. Danvers Nigel Bruce ... ...shots in the same way Rebecca haunts the new Mrs De Winter. Hitchcock directs the film brilliantly creating a sweeping prison in Manderley and a brutal Prison warden in Mrs Danvers, he is subtle and knows when to allow his actors to overdo it and when to reign them in, the script is superb, barbed and knowing but leaving doubts and holes all the time for you to consider, this is a wonderfully paced, introspective film that demands further viewings, ...

Henry V. DVD ... 'Cry God for Harry!'
Advantages: Educational, entertaining and historical. Disadvantages: Iambic pentameter isn't for everyone. Almost no extra features.
Henry V is available on DVD in a 1989 production directed by, and starring, Kenneth Branagh. This is a direct and edgy story about England’s war with France in which the flower of the French aristocracy were slaughtered in the mud of Agincort beneath a rain of arrows from English longbow men.
Derek Jacobi is the chorus who introduces the stage on which this ‘muse of fire’ will burn, and it is a modern one with electric lights and props. I’ve seen ... ...who favoured his company in Henry IV Part One, has now rejected his lower connections and assumed the mantle of royal responsibilities. Derek Jacobi appears on the White Cliffs of Dover to introduce a scene in which three English lords, Scroop, Richard, and Grey, are revealed to be traitors. Henry pretends to be on good terms with them, and then sentences them each to death.
The working class subplot continues with Bardolph, Nym, Mistress Quickly, ...

...knock at the door of Wuthering Heights." WUTHERING HEIGHTS FILM 1939 ...DVD 2004
Anyone who has been reading my recent reviews may have noticed that I have been indulging in a lot of nostalgia by watching DVD's of all my old favourite classics. My latest purchase from Amazon for the grand price of £3.24 was the 1939 'Wuthering Heights' adapted from Emily Bronte's classic novel. This was the first film dramatization of Emily Bronte's ... ...No surprise then that Wuthering Heights only received one Oscar for best cinematography. In Laurence Olivier's illustrious 60-year career, the Oscar nomination for his role as Heathcliff was the first of ten Oscar nominations he received (He won one, Hamlet, 1948) THE FILM
Emily Brontë's classic Gothic novel is one of my favorite books, so I could find some faults with the film if I wanted to be picky but the positive aspects of Wuthering ...

Slave to the System
Advantages: Shiny swords! Disadvantages: There's no budget, no script editor and stunningly average acting.
...to have the story of Spartacus told to you with talking pictures, then it's the Kirk Douglas movie all the way. It's got a better script, bigger budget and far, far better actors. There really isn't the faintest need for a remake, especially such a poor one as this. If, however, you can be sold on a good-looking guy strutting about all oiled and not wearing many clothes, and some neat sword-fights (um, so if you're like me then) you might enjoy it, ...
