'Humility is hard on the knees...'
Advantages: Great film Disadvantages: Slim on DVD extras
...Canterbury, not far from where Becket was murdered/martyred. Becket became a folk hero, a canonised saint, and the stuff of myth and legend, as useful in politics as in literature – Chaucer’s famous pilgrims telling their Canterbury tales were on their way to the same location as Henry II paid his penance for the death of Becket.
The idea of the separation of church and state is an admittedly modern invention, but even in Becket’s time, the intertwining ... ...up a background rivalry for Becket and Henry II while they are both on the same side (Henry II appointed Thomas Becket as his chancellor, a position not dis-similar to being his first, or prime, minister). When Henry decided to take control of the church by appointing his own man as the Archbishop of Canterbury, Becket then has what some have described as a road-to-Damascus conversion experience – the film follows this interpretation.

Oh, you please me.
Advantages: Well-acted, moving and interesting film, makes you think a little. Disadvantages: Slightly slow-paced, if that's not your thing.
Venus is a film about an aging actor, Maurice, played by Peter O'Toole, who lives a fairly quiet existence with the occasional minor role in a film or TV series, and meets with an actor friend, Ian, to talk about the old times. The film follows Maurice's relationship with Jessie, Ian's teenage niece, who arrives to stay at his uncle's place to help him around the house. To Ian's horror, Jessie turns out to be very different than he expected, but ... ...The encounter transforms them both to an extent, at least for a moment. Maurice appears a stereotypical pensioner when with Ian, bumbling around the house with trivial tasks. In contrast, when in Jessie's company, he seems revived into a younger man with the urges of a younger man. Jessie in turn transforms from a chavvy, ignorant teen into someone more aware of what she wants from life, and also becomes more aware of her womanhood, if you like. ...

Advantages: Brilliant casting, beautiful locations and gripping, charming story. Disadvantages: Some plot changes from book, also some dubbing.
...a celebration of the author Rosamunde Pilcher and serves to enthrall the viewer throughout. The plot is charming, following the young Judith Dunbar (Keira Knightley, later Emily Mortier) and her growing from naivete to a young woman who endures the ravages of war and adolsence to finally "come home". She is sent to boarding school in England while her parents live in Singapore, where she meets Loveday Carey Lewis (Poppy Martin, later Katie Ryder-Richardson). ... ...her to the ghastly Billy Fawcett, whose advances frighten her and taint her vision of men for a while.Loveday introduces Judith to her family (her parents are played perfectly by the legendary Joanna Lumley and Peter O'Toole) and the exciting world of Nancherrow (Wrotham Park, incidentally where Cheryl Cole was married!), the glamour of which enthralls Judith. As the years pass, Judith spends more time with the family, loving their generosity, following ...
