best thing on the bbc
Review of Casanova DVD by giksy21

Advantages: funny, well acted, love story
Disadvantages: none

...put out on the bbc, casanova was a three part drama series. An all star cast perform in this, with Peter o'toole, David Tennant, Rose Byrne, Laura Fraser, Rupert Penry Jones, Nina Sosanya, and Matt Lucas. The young Casanova is played by David Tennant, who we know now as the star of Dr who, also on the bbc. He has also starred in harry potter and the goblet of fire as Barty Crouch junior (also my wife loves him, so i believe him to be a good looking ...
...close, and exiled from venice, casanova becomes a librarian in a castle. A young parlour maid comes to him, and he is taken again by the one thing that kept him so alive when he was in his prime. Sex. One last pursuit, to see if the magic has died. So, he tells her his story. And as it goes on, edith, the made, comes to feel for him, and to grow fond of him. He tells, if you pick through the crazier exploits, a love story. When in naples, he meets ... Read review

A True Epic
Review of Lawrence Of Arabia (Wide Screen) by elixirsoo

Advantages: Direction, Cinematography and Musical Score
Disadvantages: Small screen can never do true justice

...a little known film actor. Lawrence had a great empathy with Arabs and their culture. It is through this that he was able to command the loyalty of the warring Arab tribes and unite them in aiding the British to defeating the Turks who were allied to Germany during World War I. The most important part of the story, for me, comes after the fighting. With hindsight it explains many problems facing our world today. I have a collection of DVDs, which ...
...Arabia is definitely one of those moments. The setting for my first viewing was a huge tent at Trecco Bay, a large caravan park, in Porthcawl, South Wales where I was on holiday with my family. The floor was bare sand, which added to the atmosphere created by the film, and I was about 11 or 13. The experience was magical and intense, without any full understanding of the artistry involved. Maturity brought the knowledge of why this was such a ... Read review

Hitler: The rise of evil
Review of Hitler: The Rise Of Evil DVD by paddeh

Advantages: Focuses on Hitlers rise to power. Good acting +easy to follow storyline
Disadvantages: No special features

I seem to recall that this was shown on ITV prior to its DVD release but I skipped it as I thought I wouldn't be interested. So along came the January sales and as this was at a reasonable price of £5.49 delivered from www.play.com I decided to take the plunge and purchase it; and what a good investment it was. I have seen a fair few documentaries discussing Hitler/WWII/the Nazis etc but never anything detailing how it all started. That's what made ...
...Adolf's childhood, his part played in WW1 and his inspiring speech's which resulted in him coming to power. Robert Carlyle plays Adolf Hitler and gives a terrific performance. The story is broken down in to two 90 mins (approx) episodes each focusing on different stages of his life. Both are discussed below. Episode 1: The story begins showing a young Adolf and quickly progresses to show his artistic talents. However, after being rejected by an ... Read review

A little-known gem
Review of Rosamunde Pilcher's Coming Home DVD by chazzero

Advantages: Fantastic cast, very engaging story - all-round good 2-part tv drama
Disadvantages: Emily Mortimer, some dubbing

...with the same name by Rosamunde Pilcher (which I haven't read - sorry!) The drama is set in 1930s/1940s Cornwall, and centers around Judith Dunbarr (Keira Knightly and Emily Mortimer). Her family move to Singapore when she is 11 or 12 and she is left in England going to boarding school, staying with her aunt Louise (Penelope Keith). There, she meets her best friend Loveday Carey-Lewis (Katie Ryder Richardson), whose (Joanna Lumley) own a lush stately ...
...The plot then leads on to Judith and Loveday growing up, switching actresses and living through World War II, but fighting issues still relevant today - such as shagging and love and all that sort of stuff! The whole thing is really brilliant - the cast speak for themselves! Emily Mortimer isn't all that great, but not so bad so that it detracts from the story - but Katie Ryder Richardson gives a really excellent performance. Joanna Lumley is fabulous, ... Read review

Old love for Venus rising
Review of Venus DVD by MAFARRIMOND

Advantages: Superb performances. Beautiful soundtrack.
Disadvantages: Too many close-ups. A little shudder-inducing in parts.

...in the film Venus. Venus was not (in my opinion) one of O'Toole's finest roles or one his more endearing. Without O'Toole however, the film would have been lacking. It was O'Toole's screen presence that carried the film and made what could have been a faux-pas into something strangely absorbing and worth watching. Venus is the result of collaboration between screenwriter Hanif Kureishi and director Roger Michell. This is the second film the pair ...
...mature sexuality. Venus could have become crass and smutty (and there is an occasional scene that does make you shudder). However, Mitchell approaches the relationship in a sensitive, tender, almost playful manner as the couple's attraction and respect for each other grow mutually from an original lust (sexual on his part and ambition for fame / material things on hers). The title role, Venus, is 20 year old Jessie played by Jodie Whittaker. Jessie ... Read review
