"Closer" is a movie with fair acting,. The only great thing about the film is Clive Owen and Natalie Portman. Julia Roberts and Jude Law, are low caliber in acting delivery. Yet this drama is spectacularly sordid. Not only is this drama by Mike Nichols ("The Graduate") a great example of vulgar sexual exploitation, but its display of it, solves no moral questions.. but only leaves you with a vessel of sickening feelings. ...pessimistically ponder on in the end or anything to be optimistic about. You are only filled at its conclusion, with a deep seeded sentiment of betrayal. That after spending 104 minutes watching it, you are shown deplorable images, both visual and mental, with out a meaningful reason. Mike Newell directed "Four weddings and a Funeral", "Donnie Brasco", "Pushing Tin" - so he's made quite a variety of movies... comedy, gritty drama, drama/comedy. And now (some would say) he's turned his hand to one of those "soppy dramas". Yes, the soppy drama is a genuine movie genre, doncha know? Not to prejudge these things, however, I went to see the movie. I knew it was set in a College for Girls, and I knew it starred Julia Roberts, as well ...

So it seems logical to think of it as a "women's movie" - and having seen it I concluded that I was right - it's definitely going to appeal to women a lot more than it is to men.
