My #1 favourite film of all time. Advantages: Great performances and a great story. Disadvantages: None. Many people think Sam Mendes's first movie American Beauty was his best as it won all the oscars including Best Director for himself. But I disagree. The story is about Michael Sullivan (Tom Hanks), a lifelong gangster who is on the run with his son with a sadistic hitman (Jude Law) on hot pursuit. John Rooney (Paul Newman) has got the very thing he wants but Nitti (Stanley Tucci) is heading the operation. The film also stars Daniel Craig, Jeniffer ... ...actors (Tom Hanks and oscar -nominated Paul Newman) lead the all-star cast but in my personal opinion Jude Law gave the best performance as the clever, sly, sadisitc hitman Maguire. It's good to see him in a role where he does not play one of his type-cast characters from a chick-flick. Paul Newman deserved his oscar nomination as John Rooney, a father-like figure to Michael. Deeply moving, unforgettable film Advantages: Beautifully honed performances, thoroughly involving story Disadvantages: Heavy, depressing subject matter A seriously involving and at times difficult watch, this is an amazing achievement in film. Showing once again that Sam Mendes has an uncanny insight into what makes people tick. The performances, especially from Winslet are stellar (as a side note, I don't see how this performance wasn't rewarded instead of The Reader, as I think this to be equal or better, but I guess that film involves the Holocaust so....), and the set design is gorgeous in a ... ...it's prime female star as it was a baptism of brutal fire for them both, given that it's the first time Mendes has directed his wife in a film and this was by no means an easy first film to see how that goes! I can't recommend this film enough, as I know some people could possibly be put off by the heavy subject matter. A surprisingly pleasant journey! Advantages: Much better than I had anticipated, good cast, nice story Disadvantages: Bit too dull for some, Please note that this is a film only review - also, some of the specific criteria are not relevant: the film has no special effects to speak of and I haven't seen any other films by the same director I'll admit from the outset that this was NOT at the top of my list of Films to See. Away We Go is a simple film.A film about an expecting couple looking to move away from their previous home to a new place.Burt(an ordinary insurance sales person)and Verona suddenly make the decision of moving away after Burt's parents decide to move away to europe just before the due date of their child's birth. The not so young couple have a few options and ... ...accompany them through their journey.Its a journey you don't mind taking,mainly due to the presence of such interesting characters.The character of Verona's ex-boss is truly hilarious and depicts a dysfunctional family in a lighter mood.
