Places In The Heart

Advantages: Solid performances, excellent screenplay.
Disadvantages: None.

I watched this movie because from the short synopsis on Sky's information page it sounded as though it would be a good one. Plus Sally Field is one of my favourite actresses. My expectations were met. Not once throughout the course of the film did I find myself glancing at the clock in boredom. It's a remarkable story from start to finish, although I must admit - the end scene somewhat confuses me. The movie, in short: A woman (Sally Field) is ...
...she can pay off the debts her husband left. The movie is set in Texas in 1935, and the woman takes the advice of a Negro traveller (played by Danny Glover) and sows acres of cotton. She also takes in a blind man (John Malkovich) as a border to make a few extra dollars. The events which follow are extremely well written, and excellently played by the chosen cast. Sally Field is the perfect choice for the role that she plays, as are Danny Glover and ...

War + Romance = Great Film!

Advantages: Great story, excellent acting and effects
Disadvantages: Just a little too long

Cold Mountain is another film which I purchased after reading a brilliant review on it and I have to say that I completely agree with the review about this film. It stars Jude Law who I always enjoy as he is very easy on the eye! Hubby was also pleased with this film choice as it was not a children’s cartoon! The film is set in North Carolina in the 1860’s when North and South America are at war. Inman, played by Jude Law is in the middle of a war ...
...make his way back to Cold Mountain and Ada but with the other men saying that deserted soldiers will be tried and treated for treason things are not looking good for Inman. Will Inman be able to return to his beloved Ada and will Ruby be able to teach Ada how to do an honest days work and to keep the farm going? When this film started I though it was going to be great as it did open with such a bang but then when we had the first flash back I did ...

Not a good week for Her Majesty!

Advantages: Excellent film
Disadvantages: none

...vividly that incredible week at the beginning of September 1997 - the week Princess Diana died. Particularly I remember the complete shock, followed by an outpouring of public grief never known before and probably never likely to be known again in our lifetime, and the hostility vented against the Royal Family for not showing their emotions and instead opting for the 'stiff upper lip!' I was never a big Diana fan, although I did feel her death was ...
...to note that one of the things that this film did not do, at least in my mind, was to come down on one side or another and I think that all the events were depicted in a very honest way. The key players in this film are obviously the Queen herself, Prince Philip, Prince Charles, the Queen Mother and Tony and Cherie Blair. Princes William and Harry are not shown at all which I think was a very good decision as even after all the time that had elapsed ...

Altman does British Costume Drama to Perfection

Advantages: A really good film with a great cast
Disadvantages: None

Gosford Park is an old fashioned English film made by one of the great American auteurs of the twentieth century, Robert Altman. It has a huge array of acting talent involved and was released in 2001 to critical acclaim, at the time it won best original screenplay at the Oscars as well as a Bafta for the Best British Film, it was also lauded as a return to form for Altman whilst Julian Fellowes received similar praise for his script. Ok so that's ...
...Set in 1932, Gosford Park is a wonderfully elegant English country estate. Sir William McCordle (Michael Gambon) and Lady Sylvia McCordle (Kristen Scott Thomas) gather their closest friends and relations for a weekend shooting party. The film follows the various eclectic guests who have come for the weekend as well as the staff during this hectic weekend. The film is a comedy of manners and class, it has elements of farce and sex, as well as a murder. ...

A Man For All Seasons

Advantages: Great Film! Very close to the play itself.
Disadvantages: Little Publicity...

A Man for All Seasons is a play by Robert Bolt showing the rise and fall of its main character, Sir Thomas More. Set in 16th century England, the play exposes many similarities between its era and ours. There are of course differences, with its strong theme of social hierarchy and the immense power harnessed by the reigning monarch, King Henry VIII. While there are still elements of these in Britain they are certainly far from apparent today. The ...
...are many strong themes in A Man for All Seasons one of the strongest being corruption. A Man for All Seasons focuses as much on the fall of Sir Thomas More as it does on the rising of Richard Rich. In the first act, scene eight, Rich gives Cromwell information about a silver cup given to More as a bribe. Though More rids himself of the cup as soon as he realises this, Cromwell thinks he might be able to use this to his advantage. Cromwell, desperate ...
