Places In The Heart
Advantages: Solid performances, excellent screenplay. Disadvantages: None.
I watched this movie because from the short synopsis on Sky's information page it sounded as though it would be a good one. Plus Sally Field is one of my favourite actresses.
My expectations were met. Not once throughout the course of the film did I find myself glancing at the clock in boredom. It's a remarkable story from start to finish, although I must admit - the end scene somewhat confuses me.
The movie, in short: A woman (Sally Field) is ... ...she can pay off the debts her husband left. The movie is set in Texas in 1935, and the woman takes the advice of a Negro traveller (played by Danny Glover) and sows acres of cotton. She also takes in a blind man (John Malkovich) as a border to make a few extra dollars. The events which follow are extremely well written, and excellently played by the chosen cast. Sally Field is the perfect choice for the role that she plays, as are Danny Glover and ...

The Shape of Thingies to Come
Advantages: It's the future... Disadvantages: ... and as usual it's not how we want it to be
...have been told all that Code 46 entails.
In a world of cloning, where clones are subject to so many different factors - environment, climate, food culture, chance - that they are ultimately different people, it is very difficult for anyone to make 100% sure they are not engaged sexually with their own kin. Code 46 enables what is presumably some sort of world government to check all known couples trying for babies, and all females coming by them ... ...for the same director as Code 46, Michael Winterbottom. That film, The Claim, is fabulous. His last film, 9 Songs, is appalling. All of them are entirely different in mood, style and genre.
However there seems to be a connection between many of his films, and it's not only in using FCB to write them (they've actually paired up about six or seven times in all now). In This World tailed some emigrant children halfway across the world from central ...

Father and Son?
Advantages: Heartwarming, Great scenes Disadvantages: Almost too short, ending both joyous and sad
"Dear Frankie" released in 2004, is the heartwarming story of a 9 ½ year old boy, living with his Mum and Grandmother, whose relationship with his father stems totally from the letters he receives from him while his father is on board ship.
Set against the backdrop of the Clyde in the Greenock area, in the fictitious Port Howat, the film depicts of poverty and a struggle of one woman to protect her son in an era which could almost be modern, but ... ...into the life of a single Mum, Lizzie, and her son, for whom she would move mountains to protect. For it is Lizzie who has been writing letters to Frankie for years, pretending that they are from his father, who is travelling the world with his ship.
Frankie adores receiving letters from his father, and is an intelligent child, particularly with regard to world geography, marine life and stamp collecting, interests he has gained from following his ...

...serialisation of Franco Zeffirelli's epic Jesus of Nazareth.
When Dave asked me if there were any DVD's that I would like as part of my Christmas present I said that I would like the DVD of Jesus of Nazareth so that I could watch it again whenever I wanted to.
The one that Dave got for me was the Special Edition DVD in a black metal case with a picture of the face of Jesus (Robert Powell) on the front.
The DVD set consists of two discs each split ... ...follows:

Simon Peter James Earl Jones ... Balthazar Stacy Keach ... Barabbas Tony Lo Bianco ... Quintilius James Mason ... Joseph of Arimathea Ian McShane ... Judas Iscariot Laurence Olivier ... Nicodemus Donald Pleasence ... Melchior Christopher Plummer ... Herod ...

There's final hits and final hits. What kind is this one to be?
Advantages: One Of The Best Films To Come Out Of The UK. Disadvantages: None!
...I first saw the film Trainspotting after hearing so much controversy about it on television, from reading about it in the newspapers and from everyone talking about it around me at the time. It was all everyone was talking about on it's release in 1996 and of course I just had to see it for myself to see what all the hype was about. Well I went to the pictures to watch this film and was quite shocked by this outrageously, yet brilliant tale of five ... ...ago that my husband purchased Trainspotting to add to our DVD collection as we both really enjoyed watching it over the years at various times on television (in a sick kind of way I guess). He picked it up second-hand for £1 at a car boot sale, so it certainly was a great bargain. This film really will not be suited to everyone though. I think you will either love it like I do, or absolutely hate it. It certainly is worth watching once though just ...
