A CLOCKWORK ORANGE.

Advantages: A must see film.
Disadvantages: Extreme violence, rape, laguage etc.

- A CLOCKWORK ORANGE - Released in 1971. Genre Crime/Drama/Thriller. Directed by Stanley Kubrick. Starring Malcolm McDowell, Patrick Magee and Michael Bates. Based on the 1962 book of the same name written by Anthony Burgess. BBFC Rating: 18. Running time: 136 Minutes. Clockwork Orange is one of the most shocking, controversial and mesmerising films that I have ever seen. Stanley Kubrick's future-shock vision screen adaptation brings to life accurately ...
...Orange follows the lives of a group of young thugs ('The Droogs', Russian for friend or buddy) who are lead by the charismatic and arrogant psychopath, Alex DeLarge (Malcolm McDowell). The Droogs terrorise people, for money, sexual pleasure and just plain kicks and they instil fear and create havoc wherever they go. With nihilistic lifestyle and anti establishment values that shun authority, the Droogs rape, mug, attack and stick two fingers up hard ...

Slave to the System

Advantages: Shiny swords!
Disadvantages: There's no budget, no script editor and stunningly average acting.

...to have the story of Spartacus told to you with talking pictures, then it's the Kirk Douglas movie all the way. It's got a better script, bigger budget and far, far better actors. There really isn't the faintest need for a remake, especially such a poor one as this. If, however, you can be sold on a good-looking guy strutting about all oiled and not wearing many clothes, and some neat sword-fights (um, so if you're like me then) you might enjoy it, ...

Remarkable film from Kubrick

Advantages: It's Kubrick doing what he does best
Disadvantages: It's quite long and slow

...known work, The Memoirs of Barry Lyndon which tells the tale of an Irish commoner making his way through the English aristocracy. A great innovation by Kubrick specifically for this film was to use a special lens which was initially designed for NASA, a lens capable of allowing more light in than was standard on cameras then. Coupled with the stunning locations used throughout, it must be said that this film is one of the finest shot pieces you will ...
...his rich body of work, Barry Lyndon features film making at it's finest, outstanding performances from it's cast, stunning cinematography and excellent use of music. The costume drama might not be everyone's taste, particularly as the film is quite slow moving and very long but just as Kubrick could reinvent the science fiction, the war or the comedy genre, here too he creates a film like no other. ...

Weird.. but not necessarily in a good way

Advantages: If you want something a little different to the average hollywood blockbuster
Disadvantages: a little to different

...was excited when i saw Eyes Wide Shut on DVD. But i have to say i was a little disappointed. As with all Kubricks films i was expecting something a little different and out of the ordinary. Which is exactly what i got!! But with this one i was left feeling a little unsatisfied. The whole story is based on a set of strange events unfolding over one night, which went from one crazy idea to another. I felt that it was like the director was running out ...
...idea in. Performances from Kidman and Cruise i felt were a little under par, but still average. Overall i would say it's not Stanley Kubricks finest creation, by by all means not the worst film i've ever watched. It doesn't stand anywhere near as close as Full Metal Jacket or Clockwork orange, but still watchable. ...

"Hello there, soldier. Ready to kill more Germans?"

Advantages: Expertly directed, shot, acted, written and edited. A vital, scathing message
Disadvantages: Frequently overlooked by modern audiences

With a film career spanning nearly fifty years, director Stanley Kubrick is often considered one of the great figures of modern cinema. He is also the perhaps the most consistent; his lean catalogue of thirteen features (his first, 'Fear and Desire' was near enough wiped off the face of the planet at the director's request) is choc-a-block with classics from the dystopian 'A Clockwork Orange' to the cerebral '2001: A Space Odyssey' to the ultra black ...
...mention, each one unique and brilliant in its own right. Even films that tore the critics like his final work 'Eyes Wide Shut' bode the same flair and overarching themes that make it quintessential Kubrick. 'Paths of Glory' from 1957, although not lesser known per se (on the contrary it is a film that is greatly admired), is definitely one of his more overlooked works, much like his other films of that early period in his career. A shame really as ...
