Advantages: Good strong cast, not a bad story

**This review is only of the film, not the DVD** Whilst this film fails to apparently entice some people it remains a firm favourite of mine! The cast is strong, the acting is in no way bad and whilst the plot is not exactly original, they work well with it. The film starts showing a witch a long time ago in the same village who was hanged and survived, she was an Owens woman and banished from the village... for doing nothing worse than falling ...

Disadvantages: Unusual cinematography makes film difficult to watch

A combination of setting the film on a stage and the narration, by John Hurt, does not make for an especially compelling start to the film. However this would be doing a grave disservice to this searing indictment on the mentality of small-town America [although it could just as easily be set in any country]. Advantages: Fantastic story, direction and soundtrack
Disadvantages: Can be hard to follow if you can't commit for the full 2 hours

...in and I found both the characters, soundtrack and story incredibly compelling. The Oscar nominations were deserved. Although the plot in some respects is straight-forward, three woman at three points in time, it is difficult to fully explain what is to happen and how their three lives become intertwined.
