We Want Bobby
Advantages: Star Spotting Disadvantages: Not Enough Bobby
...JFK by Oliver Stone. So Bobby is here to try to redress the balance of the man who many thought would be the next American President and their savior.
Conclusion
=
I was surprised when the end titles came up and said directed by Emilio Estevez, then suddenly everything made sense. I was wondering how so many A list stars ended up having small parts in this film and Martin Sheen and Emilio together on screen. If you like star spotting ... ...not have an actor portraying Bobby himself, the film cuts to archive footage of the man, it instead centres around the people who work at the Ambassador hotel and the people running his campaign.
I had high hopes for this film, it has an all star cast and there must surely be a lot to tell about Bobby Kennedy. However I came away feeling disappointed. I have learned nothing about the man I didn't already know. Perhaps it should have been more clearly ...

Couldn't Put Humpty Together Again
Advantages: A great cast. Disadvantages: Poorly written, subject to heavy handed metaphors and an overpowering score
...one for trying my patience. All the elements are here; a heavyweight cast, a universal story with contemporary parallels, an ominous score… But Zaillian goes completely over-the-top, smothering the film in clumsy visual metaphors (you know three people are going to die because he zooms in on three crosses at the side of the road). He signposts everything – characters play constantly with guns or gaze at each other in a meaningful way. He’s too fond ... ...air conditioning and it becomes all about damage control. You never see how the honest politician becomes slippery snake-oil salesman. It damages the dramatic impetus of the film, making the otherwise reasonable two-hour running time drag interminably, so every revelation and twist feels like hard work. Zaillian’s screenplay makes the fatal error of focussing on Jack Burden rather than Willie Stark’s fall from grace. Sadly this makes for a far less ...

Amistad - a true epic
Advantages: An all-round epic with a good storyline and good acting Disadvantages: Possibly not always historically-accurate
The movie is based on a historical 1839 legal battle which took place in the United States, after a group of slaves took control of a small ship, "La Amistad", and ended up on the shores of the New World, instead of their homes in Africa. The movie portrays this as having much to do with the duplicity of the Spanish navigator, whom the Africans take prisoner and unwisely decide to trust. Once in American custody, a number of claims are made as to ... ...those claiming ownership are the two surviving Spaniards from "La Amistad", Queen Isabella II of Spain, and two United States army officers who captured the slaves. Then, of course, there are the abolitionists, who want nothing less than the total destruction of slavery, which in 1839 was still a harsh reality in the nation's Southern states. Morgan Freeman plays a modest role as a member of the abolitionists, having been an ex-slave himself. He ...

The Worlds Fastest Indian is another film that I have meant to see ever since its cinema release a few years and have only just got round to seeing and how glad I am that I did !
The film is based on the true story of Burt Munro a man now in his 70's, lives in a small village in New Zealand where he has spent many, many years modifying his 1920's Indian motor bike with the aim of making it the fastest bike possible with his pipe dream being to take ... ...is his garage, he makes the pistons for the bike himself and generally the bike is held together with whatever else he can find.
A few things happen to Burt to make him realise that be may not have too many years left in hi, so he partially reportages his house / garage to get some money to take himself and his bike to Bourneville. The film charts every step of the journey, the people he meets and the tribulations he has getting there on a shoestring ...
