BRIEF ENCOUNTER (1945) DIRECTED BY DAVID LEAN REVIEW OF THE 2008 ITV DVD INTRODUCTION Continuing my ‘Lean Season’ reviews this latest review is about one of David Lean’s earlier films – ‘Brief Encounter’ released in 1945 The film received Oscar nominations for Best Actress, Best Director and Best Screenplay. It won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival. It is at second place in the British Film Institute Top ...
...was the fourth film that David Lean had directed.. As with his first three films, the story was based on a play by Noel Coward. Coward himself worked as a screenwriter and producer on the film. My geographical claim to fame with this film is that the famous station scene with ‘that’ clock was shot at Carnforth station, Lancashire, which is about 10 miles away from where I live. I always think of this film as a British ‘Casablanca’, and like ‘Casablanca’ ...

Sexual Tension… Whew [film only]

Advantages: Intriguing, great acting, stunning scenery
Disadvantages: If you don't like drama films, you might find it too long

A Passage to India [1984] . . . In the film which is an almost faithful adaptation of E. M. Forster's novel A PASSAGE TO INDIA (1924), Adela Quested (Judy Davis) and Mrs. Moore (Peggy Ashcroft) travel to India to visit the latter's son Ronny (Nigel Havers), who is also Miss Quested's fiancé. Ronny works there as a civil magistrate who is surrounded by other English employees, and these prefer to stay secluded in a milieu which they created to ...
...but this experience ends as a rather tragic one for both. They get the chance to meet Dr. Aziz who seems to have a revolutionary spirit that is not satisfied with how the English treat his fellow countrymen. When he talks to these two ladies, he notices that they are different from the rest, or so he thinks, and he invites them to go with him and discover certain mysterious caves in India. Here things take a different turn. They start by visiting ...

Lean's most ( falsly) underrated film

Advantages: Photography, sound effects and music blended into one perfect whole.

RYAN'S DAUGHTER DIRECTED BY DAVID LEAN "To suggest sex and leave it to the audience is much more erotic than showing it all. Sex is imagination." David Lean INTRODUCTION Here I go again, not a REALLY old classic, but a classic in my mind and another David Lean masterpiece. No one else put images and sound together in quite the way Sir David Lean did; I could NEVER understand why, in 1970 (Ok so it is nearly 40 years old!!) ...

Sex and the City

Advantages: funny, great performance
Disadvantages: long

...so many exciting reviews on Sex and the City that I decided I watch it. It is a real chick flick romantic comedy and that evening it was the perfect entertainment for me. The film was written and directed by Michael Patrick King. Actually he was the co-producer of the film as well with Sarah Jessica Parker and Darren Star. Michael Patrick King is an American film director and screenplay writer. Besides Sex and the City he wrote the screenplay of ...

Miranda separates immediately from him and sees no chance to forgive him. Charlotte has a happy family since they adopted Lily. She is a beautiful girl. Charlotte soon realises that since they gave up trying to have a baby she is pregnant. Can she carry out the baby? My opinion ...

There's final hits and final hits. What kind is this one to be?

Advantages: One Of The Best Films To Come Out Of The UK.
Disadvantages: None!

...I first saw the film Trainspotting after hearing so much controversy about it on television, from reading about it in the newspapers and from everyone talking about it around me at the time. It was all everyone was talking about on it's release in 1996 and of course I just had to see it for myself to see what all the hype was about. Well I went to the pictures to watch this film and was quite shocked by this outrageously, yet brilliant tale of five ...
...ago that my husband purchased Trainspotting to add to our DVD collection as we both really enjoyed watching it over the years at various times on television (in a sick kind of way I guess). He picked it up second-hand for £1 at a car boot sale, so it certainly was a great bargain. This film really will not be suited to everyone though. I think you will either love it like I do, or absolutely hate it. It certainly is worth watching once though just ...
