He goes on the run with a young American journalist, living in Paris, Patricia ... ...of filming.

Discover the best of European cinema
Advantages: A fantastic collection of shorts. Disadvantages: None.
...1996 - Nanni Moretti.
A cinema vérité-like short that focuses on Nanni Moretti himself, playing an anxious and slightly over-the-top manager, in charge of the Nuovo Sacher cinema, meticulously preparing the opening day for Abbas Kiarostami's Close-up.
It's a charming look at a passionate man, madly in love with cinema; in other words a film director acting the part of a devotee of another film director. Very special.
8. Gisèle Kérozène - Holland ... ...A wonderful DVD that should be considered an imperative buy for all world cinema lovers.
Each short has a wonderful and unique feel to it; Cinema16 is the perfect European shorts collection.
A must have.

Godard's 'Second first film'
Advantages: interesting cinematography, great performances, black humour Disadvantages: sometimes hard to understand, stop motion might become annoying
...this is not quite true. Slow motion implies softened shots, often occurring at a time of increased emotion. Godard, however, uses STOP motion, which creates a totally different effect. It jars at first, but don't check your DVD player - it really is meant to look like that. And it will continue like that at appropriate places throughout the film. The film has a series of in-jokes/interconnected events: cyclists you see in one of the earlier frames ... ...main male protagonist, a director, has the surname 'Godard'. Some might find it heavy going, as parts of a novel are read out over the dialogue, often the characters speaking are off camera, so you're not sure who has said what, and also the Americanised subtitles make the language seem too much like a TV drama...)
However, the performances are all perfect, including a young Isabelle Huppert as a jaded prostitute, maintaining the same blank expression ...

Portrait of a Parisian Prostitute
Advantages: Superb cinematography Disadvantages: Subtitles could be improved
Vivre Sa Vie is an early Jean-Luc Godard film which received critical acclaim when it was released in 1962. It was part of the New Wave genre of the period and although not exactly the masterpiece considered by some, it does possess a refreshing originality that has clearly stood the test of time. When renting this film I was a little weary as what to expect as I find some of Godard's later films a little tiresome and dull, but Vivre Sa Vie is a ... ...don't always translate everything that is being said in French. Nevertheless, Vivre Sa Vie is one film I wish I'd bought (the present Amazon price of £14.98 somewhat put me off) rather than rented as it is definitely worth watching a few times.
