Godard's 'Second first film'

Advantages: interesting cinematography, great performances, black humour
Disadvantages: sometimes hard to understand, stop motion might become annoying

...this is not quite true. Slow motion implies softened shots, often occurring at a time of increased emotion. Godard, however, uses STOP motion, which creates a totally different effect. It jars at first, but don't check your DVD player - it really is meant to look like that. And it will continue like that at appropriate places throughout the film. The film has a series of in-jokes/interconnected events: cyclists you see in one of the earlier frames ...

Some might find it heavy going, as parts of a novel are read out over the dialogue, often the characters speaking are off camera, so you're not sure who has said what, and also the Americanised subtitles make the language seem too much like a TV drama...) Portrait of a Parisian Prostitute

Advantages: Superb cinematography

Vivre Sa Vie is an early Jean-Luc Godard film which received critical acclaim when it was released in 1962. It was part of the New Wave genre of the period and although not exactly the masterpiece considered by some, it does possess a refreshing originality that has clearly stood the test of time. When renting this film I was a little weary as what to expect as I find some of Godard's later films a little tiresome and dull, but Vivre Sa Vie is a ...
