Two worlds collide . . .
Review of Chariots Of Fire DVD by
abisurveying
Advantages: Inspiring to people from all walks of life
Disadvantages: Can seem overly 'English'
This, in my opinion, is one of the most timeless movies ever. Anyone who believes passionately in anything will relate to Eric Liddell, and be inspired by the passion, determination and drive constantly exhibited by this great man. And in the same way, anyone who has ever been marginalised and rejected will understand the pain of Harold Abrams, and the absolute determination to prove 'the establishment' wrong. Perhaps, yes, it has aged a little and ... ...group of priveleged and wealthy young men studying at Cambridge - yet the manicured and controlled beauty of the surroundings of the rich and balanced and humanised by scenes of the Scottish Highlands. Watch this, and I defy anyone not to have a longing to find the nearest beach and just run wild . . . ...

With a screenplay adapted from the books by Dr Frederick Treves and Ashley Montague, 'The Elephant Man' takes up the story of John Merrick in his ... ...taken a savage beating at the hands of the showman. So the story is set for the main theme of the film as from here on Merrick is taken under Treves' wing and housed in private lodgings at the hospital where the latter is a respected physician.
Lynch's film follows Merrick's life as Treves attempts to help 'the elephant man' both with his medical condition and by introducing him to polite society. Thus a moving story comprised of both joy and sadness ...

Gandhi
Review of Gandhi DVD by
jaygami1986
Advantages: read opp
Disadvantages: read opp
...the fight, dedication and determination Gandhi had to secure the countries independence. The film is both moving and very informative, its slow paced but that's the purpose of the film, its both dramatic and so powerfully moving. The film was a true appraisal of the life and legacy of Mahatma, it showed his beliefs, his coriage, power and determination to fight for a just cause. The film was brilliantly directed by Attenborugh, and is lead by a very ... ...known figure. We see how Gandhi gets assisnated during an evening walk in the garden, being shot by a young man and then shouting out "Oh God" before he dies.
The film then rewinds back to the early moments of Gandhi's movement for freedom. We don't get to see his childhood or any aspect of his parental life etc, it moves straight into the pivotal moment were Gandhi is thrown off a train in South Africa, because he was travelling in first class. ...

Wings on their Heels!
Review of Chariots Of Fire (Special Edition) by
kingfisher111
Advantages: fabulously moving film
Disadvantages: none
...films of all time - Chariots of Fire. This amazing film depicts the events of the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris and the personal and public struggles of two athletes- Harold Abrahams and Eric Liddle.
The film starts at a memorial service in 1978 giving thanks for the life of Harold Abrahams. We are then taken back in time to when those two men were hardly more than boys starting out on their quest for glory. Harold Abrahams is a student at Cambridge ... ...There is also a Chariots of Fire reunion where a number of people involved including Welland and Havers sit round and leisurely reminisce about how it all began. this was also very enjoyable to watch as well.
On this second disc there are aslso some deleted scenes. It's always interesting to watch these and to wonder why some of them were left out!
Overall, this is an excellent DVD - a brilliant film with some really good extra features as well. ...
