Lonely Hearts Killers
Advantages: fast paced, intriguing, funny, Disadvantages: does not stick to the actual real life events, gory, bloody
...killing spree, targeting young single lonely and often rich women. Fernandez and Beck travel together under the guise of being brother and sister to execute their plans. They do this by responding to lonely hearts columns in the newspaper and after the money is signed over to Fernandez, they kill the women and bury the bodies in various parts of the country (in trunks, under floorboards, coal sheds etc). John Travolta stars as the lead detective ... ...women he met through the lonely hearts club. In fact the book claims that Martha insisted on sleeping in between Fernandez and one of the women to ensure they didn?t consummate the relationship. They also neglected to make Fernandez Spanish, which he was. They changed the details of some of the killings and this is particularly obvious in the final killing involving the French woman (Daphne) and her little girl (Rainelle). On the other hand, to someone ...

The best TV show ever all in one big box
Advantages: acting Disadvantages: rude
...consider myself a master of the gangster genre - I've seen every De Niro and Pacino movie, I've read all of Puzo's novels (even the rubbish ones), I've even (literally) bought the t-shirts. Then, someone suggests I watch The Sopranos. I google it, buy it, and sit back to becomE literally addicted to the finest show I have ever seen.
SEASON 1:
In a nutshell: the Soprano family are gangsters, involved in the waste disposal world, gambling, money ... ...daughter. Family number two are the mafia family - Paulie Walnuts being my personal fav. The whole show revolves around Tony trying to run the two families, failing, and going into therapy.
This IS NOT 'Analyse This'. It's a gritty, shocking, dark and funny show that pays homage to every gangster film out there. It's original, award winning and powerful. There's laughter, tears, and plenty of dead bodies.
SEASON 2:
Each season of The Sopranos ...

Couldn't Put Humpty Together Again
Advantages: A great cast. Disadvantages: Poorly written, subject to heavy handed metaphors and an overpowering score
...one for trying my patience. All the elements are here; a heavyweight cast, a universal story with contemporary parallels, an ominous score… But Zaillian goes completely over-the-top, smothering the film in clumsy visual metaphors (you know three people are going to die because he zooms in on three crosses at the side of the road). He signposts everything – characters play constantly with guns or gaze at each other in a meaningful way. He’s too fond ... ...air conditioning and it becomes all about damage control. You never see how the honest politician becomes slippery snake-oil salesman. It damages the dramatic impetus of the film, making the otherwise reasonable two-hour running time drag interminably, so every revelation and twist feels like hard work. Zaillian’s screenplay makes the fatal error of focussing on Jack Burden rather than Willie Stark’s fall from grace. Sadly this makes for a far less ...

Sopranos Season 6 - Wha' cha gonna do?
Advantages: Brilliant directing and acting Disadvantages: Very fast paced, can be hard to keep up
...a fantastic kick start to the season and really performed in true Soprano style.
Unlike many TV shows which tend to deteriorate the longer they go on, Sopranos Season Six lives up to it's true form and is consistent throughout. At the end of episode one Tony is shot by his uncle Junior who's continuing to lose his marbles and has been for some time now.
The following two episodes continue with Tony in a coma in critical condition with little chance ... ...to make it back in the movie industry and produce a Saw/Godfather II slasher movie called Cleaver.
In episode 2 and 3 whilst Tony is in his coma we see him playing a series of events in his mind where it seems he's being shown the way to Heaven maybe? I didn't quite get the gist of it to be honest but basically he has to choose life or death. A Few old characters pop every now and then too, the dead ones of course, Adriana (Chris' fiance) and Tony ...

Redford is a criminal but we still all like him.
Advantages: Great cast, nice tale Disadvantages: Completely implausible, and full of clichés
...watchable film, with all of the ingredients for a diverting, if not thought provoking night in.
The plot is a bit silly all told, Robert Redford is a highly decorated soldier who is sent to military prison for an aberration of judgement. Everyone has heard of him, and is in awe of him, including the Head Warden (Gandolfini of 'Soprano's' fame). Everyone decides that the warden is a bit of a nasty fellow, and Redford leads an uprising.
It is full ... ...by rather excellent performances from the main protagonists, and an understanding from the viewer that they have to suspend reality and not pick at the plot holes. I am not normally fond of these type of films with the americanised feelgood ending and hurrahs, but I have to admit, I have watched it more than once, and enjoyed it. ...
