Great series
Review of The Sopranos - Series 1 - Complete DVD by
jonnydeppontv
Advantages: Whole first series in 1 box
Disadvantages: no extras
...Not on your nelly! From the first opening sequence we were hooked. Follow the life of Tony and his 2 familes - His mum, wife and 2 kids and the 'other family'. You get hooked on the story line and can't wait for the next episode - guess what you won't have to its all in 1 box set!!! Catchy music in there also. Very funny scenes and when its all over you can buy series 2. You'll end up wishing you were part of his family - the fellas will love the ... ...- it doesn't go over the top with it like so many mafia style movies. Very believable. You end up hating some of the characters and can't wait for them to get whacked!!!! And you fall in love with Tony from the start. Once you have watched this you only have another 5 box sets to go to catch up to current series 6 which is awaiting final airing in US (March 2007). Plus the current prices on amazon/in virgin make the box sets a worth while buy. ...

Sopranos Season 6 - Wha' cha gonna do?
Review of The Sopranos - Series 6 Vol.1 DVD by
steve0898
Advantages: Brilliant directing and acting
Disadvantages: Very fast paced, can be hard to keep up
...a fantastic kick start to the season and really performed in true Soprano style.
Unlike many TV shows which tend to deteriorate the longer they go on, Sopranos Season Six lives up to it's true form and is consistent throughout. At the end of episode one Tony is shot by his uncle Junior who's continuing to lose his marbles and has been for some time now.
The following two episodes continue with Tony in a coma in critical condition with little chance ... ...to make it back in the movie industry and produce a Saw/Godfather II slasher movie called Cleaver.
In episode 2 and 3 whilst Tony is in his coma we see him playing a series of events in his mind where it seems he's being shown the way to Heaven maybe? I didn't quite get the gist of it to be honest but basically he has to choose life or death. A Few old characters pop every now and then too, the dead ones of course, Adriana (Chris' fiance) and Tony ...

Tony takes the Fifth
Review of The Sopranos - Series 5 - Complete DVD by
sigmatech
Advantages: As good as ever
Disadvantages: None
...~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Cert: 18
The fifth series of the Sopranos finally won the Emmy for Outstanding Dramatic Series, an accolade that it should have received for each of its previous 4 seasons. So why did season 5 pick up the Emmy were other years the show failed to beat of the likes of the West wing? Probably because the West Wing represents the ideal America with an ideal President whereas the Sopranos represent an America the establishment would ... ...knock the West Wing, it's a fine dramatic series but it plays it safe in away the Sopranos never would. The fact that the Sopranos won the Emmy for season 5 shows that by this stage even the Academy could no longer ignore this ground breaking show.
The fifth series is indeed worthy of its Emmy, plotlines were tighter and better developed than in the previous season. The injection of new blood in the likes of Tony Blundetto (Steve Buscemi), "Feech" ...

Fourth Time Around
Review of The Sopranos - Series 4 - Complete DVD by
sigmatech
Advantages: Continuation of a groundbreaking drama
Disadvantages: Adult drama, with adult language, and extreme violence
...was a low point for the Sopranos in many fans estimation, and I initially agreed with some of their sentiments unlike earlier seasons I found myself glancing at the clock occasionally during some episodes waiting for the story to kick in. The first time I watched this season I did think that maybe the show had peaked and was on the wind down, bereft of ideas the writers were content to give us endless minutes of Tony and Carmela arguing as their ... ...anywhere. I waited patiently for the Season to get going whilst my finger hovered over FF button on the remote.
The Season eventually did get going and produced some worthy and memorable episodes, but the Show as a whole didn't grip me the way Seasons 1 through 3 did. Maybe it was my expectations that were at fault, the Sopranos had raised the crossbar so high that it was nay on impossible to sustain the momentum. At least that was my initial impression ...

Couldn't Put Humpty Together Again
Review of All The King's Men DVD by
afy9mab
Advantages: A great cast.
Disadvantages: Poorly written, subject to heavy handed metaphors and an overpowering score
...one for trying my patience. All the elements are here; a heavyweight cast, a universal story with contemporary parallels, an ominous score… But Zaillian goes completely over-the-top, smothering the film in clumsy visual metaphors (you know three people are going to die because he zooms in on three crosses at the side of the road). He signposts everything – characters play constantly with guns or gaze at each other in a meaningful way. He’s too fond ... ...air conditioning and it becomes all about damage control. You never see how the honest politician becomes slippery snake-oil salesman. It damages the dramatic impetus of the film, making the otherwise reasonable two-hour running time drag interminably, so every revelation and twist feels like hard work. Zaillian’s screenplay makes the fatal error of focussing on Jack Burden rather than Willie Stark’s fall from grace. Sadly this makes for a far less ...
