A Tale of Sin, Guilt, Lust and Redemption
Advantages: A well acted and crafted movie Disadvantages: None
...a beautiful country estate in Brideshead Revisited but this film concerns itself more with sin, guilt, lust, redemption and more importantly - religion. Adapted from the novel written by Evelyn Waugh in 1945, Brideshead tells us the story of a young, naive painter from an unpretentious background studying history at Oxford University. A random meeting with Sebastian Flyte - a young man who spends most of his time cultivating a high sensitivity to ... ...- the elegant estate of Brideshead Castle. Sebastian doesn't really want Charles to get involved with his family and wants to keep him all to himself but gradually Charles meets all the family members; Lady Marchmain (Emma Thompson), the female leader of the family whose Catholic beliefs have taken a diversion toward unyielding guilt mongering, loveable and amusing, Julia (Hayley Atwell), eager and funny brother Bridley, and very devout younger sister, ...

I won't Revisit this
Advantages: Costumes were great, great scenery shots Disadvantages: The acting, the plot, the pace
...hearts are broken - but Brideshead remains the centre of it all, and is constantly a part of their lives. Will Charles ever be able to win the approval of Lady Marchmain, will Sebastien ever come to terms with his demons and will Julia ever be true to her heart? Or has Brideshead left the Marchmain family cursed?
This film was the choice of my fiance who put it on our "to watch" list after seeing it on the shelf in the library a few weeks ago. We ... ...the house used to represent Brideshead is just glorious. It suits the period and the feel of the movie, and the fountain was incredibly well used in the movie too. The scenes in Italy were enjoyable, as were the scenes in Oxford, but people who know Oxford will notice some errors in location in the earlier scenes which annoyed my other half, but I suppose they edit it to make it look all the better for the movie! The costumes were very good for the ...

Sex, Lies and Intrigue? But this is CRANFORD!!!
Advantages: Great cast, emotional, involving, beautiful period setting Disadvantages: None
...to 1843. The village of Cranford is a market town in the North West of the country, soon to be changed by the arrival of the railway. It has a very traditional feeling to it, as the occupants live by various rules depending on their social status. There are many women living there and very few eligible men, so the arrival of a new one - like young Doctor Harrison - is a huge talking point.
The events of the year vary from trivial to extremely important, ... ...Cranford experience birth, death and marriage, as well as love, broken hearts, financial difficulties, strong friendships and trying to keep up with fashion.
While some elements of Cranford are very resistant to change, the newer younger people are happier to adapt and are much more open to modernisation and moving forward. One of these is Mary Smith (Lisa Dillon) who comes to live with two of the eldest ladies of Cranford - spinster sisters Deborah ...

Same Old, Same Old
Advantages: .......................... Disadvantages: Its all so terribly 1940's, but not in a good way
The Baker is very simple British comedy about a hired killer who decides to take a softer touch with one of his hired hits. Offering the man an option to simply disappear rather than be executed, the news about Milo's (Damien Lewis) lenience gets back to his employer and Milo finds himself a target for killing. In order to escape his fate Milo puts New York behind him and heads to the Welsh countryside and a small rural town. After a suspicious arrival ... ...baker. It's not long before the locals led by Eggs (Dyfan Dwyfor) start to doubt his baking experience, and realise that he is (or rather was) a hired killer, in a small town where little arguments get out of control everyone knows somebody they want dead.
The Baker starts very promising but very quickly loses its sheen, I found not 30 minutes in that the movie felt an awful lot like many British comedies of probably more than 40 years prior. I'd ...

Like a Bad Dream
Advantages: The soundtrack included some tracks I remember fondly. Disadvantages: An appallingly messy, pointless movie from beginning to end.
...a sexually charged relationship with the beautiful Anna. The worse his real life gets, the more time he wants to spend in his dreams. He goes to a dream guru, who advises him how to control his dreams and get the most out of his sleeping life.
Presumably the only reason writer-director Jake Paltrow got a distribution for this meaningless pile of pretentious twaddle was because he got his more famous sister onboard. The film plays like a first attempt ... ...throws every available trick at the screen in the hope they will resolve into some kind of style. He shoots hand-held on digital video, which makes the movie look cheap because he can't keep the camera still. It's hardly surprising all the characters are so depressed with the grey world in which they live. It's supposed to be New York, but is doubled unconvincingly by London. A cast of poorly-accented British bit-parters puts paid to any illusions ...
