Loyalty to country or family?
Review of Notorious DVD by sunmeilan

Advantages: Superb performance by Ingrid Bergman
Disadvantages: Quite slow to begin with

Introduction Just in case you haven't noticed, I'm a big fan of Hitchcock films, particularly the psychological thrillers, and although this film does not quite fit into that category, it is still a strong story directed by a master. Those of you who don't like to watch older films like this because they are black and white and old-fashioned don't know what you are missing. Review of An Officer And A Gentleman (Special Edition) by sghawken

Advantages: Compelling multi-layered movie
Disadvantages: The packaging

...admit to I know, but An Officer And A Gentleman has been one of my favourite movies for a good many years. I first saw the movie back in 1983, and although I skip a few years in between viewings it’s a movie I watch again and again! Why do I enjoy the movie, I hear you cry? For me it’s the mix of genre’s; primarily the movie is a romantic movie, but at its heart it’s a movie about Navy trainees preparing to go out and fight for there country. This ...
...of Helen Mirren; claims that An Officer And A Gentleman is a movie aimed more for the male audience. Its themes are close to many a mans heart, the need to be the “alpha male”, the desire to succeed, the love of a good woman, or in some cases the love of a bad woman. Hackford describes the movie as a mans love story. Richard Gere plays the part of Zach Mayo, although he was by this time an established actor his part here spring boarded himself into ... Don't be Suckered
Review of The Hoax DVD by afy9mab

Advantages: It's intersting to see Gere playing against type and Molina is as dependable as ever.
Disadvantages: Pedestrian direction and writing and a film without a genre.

...and his publishers are on the brink of dropping him. Then he decides to write a bogus official biography of notorious billionaire recluse Howard Hughes. According to him, Hughes wants a million dollar advance and will only communicate with the publishers through Irving. Surprisingly the company falls for his scam. However, news of the book sparks a media feeding frenzy and Irving has to move fast to stay one step ahead of the pack. Director Lasse ...
...this based-on-fact tale. He lacks the eye for detail and the cynicism required to make this a biting satire of the celebrity-hungry media. Instead it plays out as more of a muted caper where Irving has to go to increasingly ridiculous lengths to stay ahead of the game. Sadly the film doesn't have quite enough gloss or sparkle to excel in this area. Truth be told, the production values make it look like a made-for-TV movie. The film stock is grubby ... Read review
