The King of Fellini Films
Review of Fellini's 8 1/2 DVD by snag2772

Advantages: autobiographical, symbolic, surreal, heavy, dramatic, italian
Disadvantages: none at all

...film is loosely based on Fellini's own life and fast times in 1950s Rome. Marcello Mastroianni portrays Guido who is desperately trying to get his film finished, but has no idea how to end it. Throughout the film, Fellini uses (and creates) some of cinema history's most amazing images through techniques like flashbacks, slow dissolves and the shadowplay should have won it's own award. This film also marks a change in the style of film Fellini himself ...
...of his career. Gone are the Neorealistic masterpieces of his younger years "I Vitelloni" "Il Bidone" and "Nights of Cabiria" were all amazing films, but to watch 8 1/2 you wouldn't believe its by the same man. Fellini began heavily visual films after this movie, and went to some extremes with this as well ( see "Satyricon"). This is one of those movies that anyone interested in the true masterworks that changed the face of world cinema should not ... Read review

Classic description of the "female" Eternal City
Review of Fellini's Roma (Subtitled) by demetrak

Advantages: INTELLIGENT, humorous, sarcastic, depictive, allegoric, surrealistic, insider's view of Rome
Disadvantages: (although it is not a disadvantage for me) very fast scene changes, may miss the plot if not used to Fellini's work

...film, perfect example of Federico Fellini's work. However, the film is rather difficult to understand and I would not recommend it to those who are not interested in alternative cinema. In this review I try to explain the concept of Roma, as I've been always interested in Fellini's work and I think I can give a clear picture of the one of his most popular films. 3 POINTS OF VIEWING THE CITY In a nutshell, "Roma" displays three different essential ...
...introduced through memory: Young Federico Fellini's first impressions of Rome. He recalls his longing to visit Rome since he was a child, his first experiences in the city as a teenager; we can observe the impact that the city has on his still provincial spirit and way of thinking. He has to deal with the typical Romans, the family he's living with in a roman family house and he has to follow their everyday life. Secondly, Rome is introduced through ... Read review

American Gothic
Review of There Will Be Blood DVD by l-m-n-o-p

Advantages: Fantastic performances, characters, soundtrack, photography...
Disadvantages: Story meanders a lot; at 158 minutes long, it will bore many

...is what, for me, makes There Will Be Blood so great. Whilst the finale is certainly unexpected, not entirely convincing and defies most of the rules of modern cinema, I loved it. As the grotesque Plainview bellowed "I'm finished!", everyone in the audience simultaneously held their breath in a shocked silence. There Will Be Blood is one of the most ambitious, beautiful and unpredictable films of the new millennium. It's also incredibly divisive. ...
...is generally the case) or you will find it hammy. The shrieking, atonal score will haunt or annoy you. As for the ending, well, it either will blow your mind and go down as one of the best climaxes in the history of cinema, or leave you shaking your head in disbelief that the director could do something so ridiculous after the excellent preceding two hours of the film. Either way, you have to admire Anderson's audacity. ... Read review

PS Its Brilliant!
Review of P.S. I Love You DVD by DeniseKelly40

Advantages: Great storyline
Disadvantages: May not be your type of film

...different and each ends with P.S. I love you. It is quite a romantic film, which could make you cry, but is light hearted all at the same time. Gerry has Holly doing lots of different things from singing to sending her to a trip to Ireland. By the time his letter stop Holly is stronger and is ready to move on as she has accepted what has happened and that he has died. Throughout the film you find out how Holly and Gerry met, about their relationship ...
...You feel like you can relate to them. Hilary Swank is the main character in this film. She is Holly and I think she plays the part very well. She shows Holly's emoticons well. Gerry is played by Gerard Butler who also puts on a good performance as the loveable Gerry. The only problem is his Irish accent wasn't good at all. Being Irish myself I struggled to work out why he was speaking so funny (I thought he had a lisp). Also I never would have figured ... Read review

What's on your Bucket List?
Review of The Bucket List DVD by bonsi6337

Advantages: Deals with issues compassionately
Disadvantages: You will need tissues handy

...that I wanted to see the film, and the trailers looked good. Hubby was a bit undecided but agreed that he would accompany me to the cinema. I think that secretly he wanted to see the film but just did not want to admit the fact! So off we toddled to the cinema, paid our money and sat down. I was excited to see what these two legends would come up with as they are both legends in their own right and for them to team up now; well lets just say that ...
...who he annoys. Chambers, on the other hand, is a mechanic, working class and a bit of a history expert. They find out that they do have something in common - they are both dying. Cole is hospitalised in one of the hospitals he owns and finds that his own rule of two people to a room, no exceptions, has come back to bite him in the behind. Chambers is the other occupant of the room. Slowly the two men get to know each other, and become friends. ... Read review
