Not a good week for Her Majesty!
Review of The Queen DVD by kingfisher111

Advantages: Excellent film
Disadvantages: none

...vividly that incredible week at the beginning of September 1997 - the week Princess Diana died. Particularly I remember the complete shock, followed by an outpouring of public grief never known before and probably never likely to be known again in our lifetime, and the hostility vented against the Royal Family for not showing their emotions and instead opting for the 'stiff upper lip!' I was never a big Diana fan, although I did feel her death was ...
...to note that one of the things that this film did not do, at least in my mind, was to come down on one side or another and I think that all the events were depicted in a very honest way. The key players in this film are obviously the Queen herself, Prince Philip, Prince Charles, the Queen Mother and Tony and Cherie Blair. Princes William and Harry are not shown at all which I think was a very good decision as even after all the time that had elapsed ... Read review

Loved by God and me
Review of Amadeus (Special Edition) by Suzela

Advantages: Superb music, script, sets, acting
Disadvantages: None

...celebrating the life of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart directly it focuses on the reminiscing of an aged and insane Antonio Salieri - the “forgotten” court composer of Emperor Joseph II at the time of Mozart’s time in Vienna. Although the historical details of the plot are no more than hearsay and supposition, this hardly matters. The story is so beautifully written and moving that you cannot help but be moved by it. I don’t want to give too much of the ...
...to go away and experience it for yourself. Rather than spoilers, I would prefer that you had pointers! I first saw this film in the late 80’s and had watched my “recorded off the telly” version for years until it eventually gave up the ghost. I didn’t replace it for one reason or another but when I saw they had brought out a director’s cut edition with 20 minutes extra footage I put it straight on my Christmas list. I wasn’t sure what the new scenes ... Read review

One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest - My take
Review of One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest (Wide Screen) by eYeLeSs_SiC

Advantages: See for yourself!
Disadvantages: None

One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest directed in 1975 by Milos Forman, produced by Michael Douglas, is based upon the novel written by Ken Kesey. The film has, over the years, achieved something of a cult status . Set in a mental institution ---- Jack Nicholson is a criminal sentenced to jail. Rather than serve his days stuck behind bars he opts for what he thinks will be the more comfortable option of a period in psychiatirc hosptial where he thinks ...
...an awaiting Nurse Ratched. One night,, McMurphy sneaks into the nurse's station and calls his girlfriend to bring alcohol and assist in his escape. She brings a friend, and both enter the ward by seducing a male nurse. The patients of the ward become intoxicated and go wild, while Billy flirts with McMurphy's girlfriend/call girl. McMurphy doesn't mind, and invites them to a room where they can be in private. McMurphy then waits with Chief until ... Read review

Cowboy and the Indian
Review of One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest (Special Edition) by groinstraddle

Advantages: Jack Nicholson at his most iconic
Disadvantages: Nurse Ratched is a big meanie! Boooo!

...to McMurphy. He's the one that you can most easily empathise with. He watches his inmates with incredulity at first, but later his personality wins over the group. The inmates include Danny DeVito, Christopher Lloyd, Vinny Schiavelli and Brad Dourif, who were unknown at the time, but have since gone on to appear in numerous Hollywood films. They were well chosen, as in this context, they all appear strange, and at the time it was unknown as to whether ...
...as he'd like, and at one stage, she becomes an infuriatingly impassable wall of evil. It's a quite incredible performance that justifiably won her the 1975 Oscar for Best Actress. McMurphy organises parties, a fishing trip, and dreams of a breakout, but thanks to Nurse Ratched, his dreams don't quite come off as planned. When you watch 'the making of' documentary, or listen to director Milos Forman's commentary you get an enhanced vision of the ... Read review

SWITCHING PARTNERS
Review of One Night Stand DVD by michellej

Advantages: Okay movie
Disadvantages: -

...walks in… yes… it’s his one night stand. Now that his adultery is staring him straight in the face, his guilty conscience makes him see his life from a different perspective. There’s some twists and slides, it’s quite amusing at the end of the movie when it shows that Wesley gets together with his one night stand, and his ex-wife gets together with Natassja’s ex-husband. Nothing more than couple swapping. ... Read review
