Taking the law into your own hands
Review of Mystic River DVD by
sunmeilan
Advantages: Chilling story
Disadvantages: None
...director, including films such as Mystic River, The Bridges of Madison County and Million Dollar Baby. The plot
Three childhood friends, Jimmy Markum, Dave Boyle and Sean Devine are reunited over the murder of Jimmy's beautiful young daughter, Katie. Sean is one of the detectives assigned to the case and Dave, who has had some contact with Jimmy over the years, was one of the last people to see Katie alive. As a sub-plot, there is also the story ... ...the road, when they are stopped by two men claiming to be police. They force Dave into the car; after which he goes missing for several days, until he manages to escape. The three boys' friendship is never quite the same after this episode.
As the investigation into Katie's death continues, it becomes clear that Dave, who didn't return home until very late that night and was covered in blood, is trying to hide something. But was it as innocent as ...

One in a million
Review of Million Dollar Baby DVD by
kirkytracy
Advantages: Great fight scenes, tear jerking, brilliant acting
Disadvantages: None
...to see it.
In Million Dollar Baby, Eastwood plays Frankie Dunn, an ex boxer who is now a trainer looking for a boxer to win him a title. He owns a gym which he runs with the help of Morgan Freeman who plays Eddie Dupris. Eddie lost an eye in a boxing match for a title and Frankie holds himself reponsible for this.
Hilary Swank plays Maggie Fitzgerald. She is 31 years old and has grown up with her mum and sister on a trailer park. Determined not ... ...in a trailer she leaves her family, gets a job waitressing and sets about learning to box. Something she has always wanted to do and the one thing she thinks she can be good at. When she first approaches Frankie to train her he is not interested as he thinks she is wasting her time because of her age. He also doesn't train girls. Classic girly weepy film for the older lady
Review of The Bridges Of Madison County DVD by
sungold98
Advantages: Unbearably tense at the climax
Disadvantages: Not quite as fully finished as the book
Forget the fact that this is Meryl Street and Clint Eastwod. Forget the fact the Meryl is stuck in one of her accents that obviously isn't her own, because we know who she is so well. Forget the fact that Clint just sticks with his strong silent type character. This is a fabulous film.
Some might say that it is a love story. I think it is a story about a mid-life crisis. Meryl's family all drive off on a family jaunt for a few days, and she is left ... ...notes, flowers and dancing in the kitchen. Such things as dreams are made of. But then she has to decide between her home/husband/children and a life with this stranger. Hubby comes back while Clint is still in town. The rain lashes down, and she has to choose which car to get into. Legendary direction! I cried and cried.
Woo! I'd better calm down! I love this film. I also love the book. Try it. ...

Blood Work - Starring Clint Eastwood
Review of Blood Work DVD by
jenhen87
Advantages: Well written story by Michael Connelly
Disadvantages: The film is disapointing as they have changed the story slightly. The investigation isn't as intense as the book described it.
I know that you can't get as much information into a 90 minute film as you can in a 400 page book, however this film disapointed me.
Lets move away from the book because the film is quite a good watch.
Clint Eastwood stars as Terry McCaleb, an ex police investigator.
After leaving the force in need of a heart transplant, McCaleb finds himself on the case of a shooting in a corner shop. With the help of his trusted friend Noone he investigates ... ...linked. The film sways into the usual police investigation movie, far-fetched clues begin to appear as to why the murder had taken place.
At this point I am actually realising that I have forgotten the main body of the plot. Most of the details I am thinking of are actually from the book. The plot changed dramatically and the killer ended up to be a completely different person. The film is well staged though, the characters are intoduced well and ...

"New York Is Boring!"
Review of Midnight In The Garden Of Good And Evil DVD by
habitualdamnation
Advantages: Quiet charm, atypical direction, satisfying ending
Disadvantages: No substantial message, just great film-making
Truly demonstrated in this film as the story takes place in Savannah, Georgia, one of the oldest established southern states in the USA. As John Cusack told his nagging agent on the phone, they walk imaginary pets here, they're all heavily armed and they're all drunk. This is definitely a strange movie with a very misleading title and yet surprisingly satisfying!
*******
SYNOPSIS: Based on John Berendt's best-selling book of the same title, the ... ...murder case in Savannah. An enthusiastic journalist for Town & Country magazine from New York is assigned to write on a high-classed elitist party thrown by a wealthy proprietor Mr. James Williams. The millionaire is subsequently accused of the murder of his gay lover and the journalist stays on to investigate the matter as he plans to write a book about it. Fascinated as he already is by the southern mannerisms and idiosyncrasies, the city-slicker ...
