Relationships are Never Easy

Advantages: Good storyline, Great acting
Disadvantages: May be a bit confussing for some, lots of strong language and sex talk

I really could not make up my mind if I wanted to see this film or not but I think the deciding factor for me was Jude law and Julia Roberts. I have to say that not knowing what to expect from this film I was indeed very surprised by it. The plot is somewhat different to any film I have seen before. There are 4 main characters, Dan who writes Obituaries for a living and is just releasing a book, Anna who is a photographer, Larry a Dermatologist and ...
...working as a waitress. At the start of the film we see Dan and Alice meeting each other and instantly falling for one another and then we move to a year later when Dan is off having his photograph taken for the cover of his new book when he meets Alice. Alice is divorced and she and Dan instantly find an attraction between themselves but Alice rejects Dan when she finds he has a girlfriend. Dan thinks he is getting his own back on Anna by making ...

Donnie Brasco Film Review

Advantages: Pacino and Depp
Disadvantages: Story

...member struggling for recognition, while Donnie is posing as a diamond expert in hope that he can worm his way into mob headquarters. They start working together and become good friends. The boss, Dominick "Sonny Black" Napolitano (Michael Madsen), notices that Donnie is a trustworthy candidate and elevates his status within his crew, while Lefty is continually neglected, unable to make enough money. All the time this is happening, the criminal underworld ...
...phrase "forget about it" means, Donnie replies with the movie's most memorable piece of dialogue: "Forget about it is like if you agree with someone, you know, like Raquel Welch is one great piece of ass, forget about it. But then, if you disagree, like A Lincoln is better than a Cadillac? Forget about it! you know? But then, it's also like if something's the greatest thing in the world, like mingia those peppers, forget about it. But it's also like ...

Angels in America-a gay fantasia?

Advantages: Fabulous acting and beautiful cinematography
Disadvantages: possibly length

...of the programme. Whilst Angels in America is compelling in dealing with the relationships of the main characters and the subtlities involved in human interaction, it also has a whole other level when Prior possibly sinks into insanity and believes he is visited by the 'Angel of America' and is given a mission to halt human progress which has driven God away from earth leaving only the angels. It is left to the viewer to decide whether the fantastical ...
...difficulties they are experiencing. Angels in America won four Golden Globes for its acting and this is a case where they were certainly all well deserved. Meryl Streep manages to be convincing in her various roles particularly as Joe's mother Hannah where she shows the many levels that somebody can function on. Al Pacino is also outstanding as Roy Cohn. My personal favourite character was Prior, acted by Justin Kirk, who is outstanding both as a ...

Fantasy month in heaven

Advantages: The casting is perfect and the chemistry sends shivers down the spine. Josie Lawrence, while never quite reaching her full potential, certainly shows in her first major role that she CAN do mroe than improvise!
Disadvantages: None in particular

It all begins with a half glimpsed advertisement in the Times. "For those who appreciate wisteria and sunshine". Lottie Wilkins (Josie Lawrence) sees this and races off to her Womens club where she finds neighbour, Rose Arbuthnot (Miranda Richardson), and asks her to go with her. Finally agreeing at the following Sunday's church jumble sale, they engage the castle through the owner. After realising that the cost plus extra money will break them they ...
...daughter of a wealthy Lord, and Mrs Fisher, an old grand-dame very set in her ways, and those of her old, deceased author friends. Surrounded in Italy by the magic of San Salvatore, the psychic Lottie soon realises that her cold, unforgiving husband may flourish in the place, as would that of Rose's husband. I won't give away any more of the story, there are one or two little twists in the story along the way. This is adapted from the book of ...

A women's movie, whether Mona, or Lisa, or...

Advantages: Looks great, nostalgic look at a narrow section of US life
Disadvantages: Period details may not be that accurate, very soppy

Mike Newell directed "Four weddings and a Funeral", "Donnie Brasco", "Pushing Tin" - so he's made quite a variety of movies... comedy, gritty drama, drama/comedy. And now (some would say) he's turned his hand to one of those "soppy dramas". Yes, the soppy drama is a genuine movie genre, doncha know? Not to prejudge these things, however, I went to see the movie. I knew it was set in a College for Girls, and I knew it starred Julia Roberts, as well ...
...Dunst, and also Juliet Stevenson). So it seems logical to think of it as a "women's movie" - and having seen it I concluded that I was right - it's definitely going to appeal to women a lot more than it is to men. Not necessarily a problem, and there are plenty who enjoy seeing a soppy drama or two. Having said that, the story has a serious, more political side, however much it is dealt with in a lightweight way. The date is 1953, and the story ...
