Anna and the King personal view
Advantages: Great storyline, fantastic acting and good action shots Disadvantages: Will not please die hard King and I fans
...Killers) - Jodie Foster as Anna Leonowens (Panic Room, Contact, Nell, Silence of the Lambs)
The Film is based on the diaries of Anna Leonowens, who died in Canada, Quebec from a stroke in 1915.
I think this is better than the original (King and I) despite my fondness of musicals. The acting is superb and there is a huge cast of extras.
I can't imagine how difficult this was to make a film with the costumes (that are superb) and locations involved.
... ...Fiesty teacher, recently widowed who travels to Siam to teach the children of King Mongkut. There she learns that Siam is very different from all that she knows back in England.
The film is set in the 1860s and the relationship between the Teacher and the King develops from a cold respect for each others values, into a love interest/ sparring contest.
Chow Yun-Fat is magnificent in the title role of the King and plays a philosophical Ruler with ...

We live in the Shadowlands
Advantages: Briliant Acting, Beautiful settings, Compelling Storyline Disadvantages: Very sad
How can it be that some of the greatest stories of the 20th century were written by academics? In Oxford in the 1950s two great series of books were born and brought before an unsuspecting public. There was Tolkien's 'Lord of the Rings' with its (in my view) overblown mythology, and there was also the Narnia books, a series of compelling stories for children written by an English lecturer, Clive Staples Lewis, an eminent scholar and theologian. What ... ...that he was a confirmed bachelor, living with his brother in a small cottage on the outskirts of Oxford. The story of Lewis' life is well documented, especially in the book 'Shadowlands', which in the mid 1980s was dramatised by the BBC into a film starring Joss Ackland and Clare Bloom.
In 1993, Sir Richard Attenborough made the story into a film starring Anthony Hopkins (he wasn't a 'sir' then) and Debra Winger. The film is around 2 hours long, ...

The Remains of the Day - Repressed Love, Beautifully Acted
Advantages: Great lead performances and supporting cast. Disadvantages: Claustrophobic, lacks excitement
...with Miss Kenton (Thompson) and the film takes place with events leading up to the Second World War. During their time they form a close relationship but repress true feelings for each other. The subplot involves meetings between diplomats taking place within the hall which are to shape political foreign relations between America, Britain and Germany and the controversy that surrounds Lord Darlington’s friendship with right-wing extremists. The story ... ...during their time working at the hall and then 20 years later when they both reflect on their time together. The films famous supporting cast are excellent but it is Hopkins and Thompson who give the film subtlety and meaning. Hopkins deeply conveys a man unable to display political views or express desire properly and who has much dignity and authority but who is torn inside. The settings are quite claustrophobic but genuine as most of the film ...
