basic plot saved by authentic and rich relationship acting
Advantages: relationships Disadvantages: plot
WHAT IS IT ABOUT: Robert De Niro stars as Vincent Lamarca, a tough cop whose investigation into a recent murder brings him to the door of his drug addict son. WAS IT ANY GOOD: As a De Niro fan, I have to say that this is an oddly poignant movie from the king of acting. At first glance it has all the appearance of a low budget, throw away film that has nothing going for it except the big man's name, but it's actually pretty good. At the heart of its ... ...James Franco; I don't know if the two knew each other before the movie, but I was amazed at the authenticity of the relationship between the two. Not only is it realistic, it raises some great questions about where your loyalty lies, and the nature vs nurture debate. Frances McDormand has a small but important part to play, and isn't she just a cracker? Fargo and Burn After Reading are two much better showcases of her talent. The plot can be criticised ...

Jackie Brown Film Review
Advantages: Characters Disadvantages: Tarantion isn't for everyone
...tend to enjoy his movies. Jackie Brown, his third as a director, may not seem like the most stylistic of his works within the first sitting -- especially when it has Pulp Fiction to contend with -- but it's a film that will grow on you each time you watch it. The leisurely pace is one of the main reasons why I like it so much. So, what is Jackie Brown about? Well, the title character (Pam Grier) works as a flight attendant for a small Mexican airline, ... ...Jackson). The FEDS soon bust Jackie and attempt to cut a deal with her to get to her boss. Feeling threatened by the law and Ordell, she hires an honest bail-bondsman, Max Cherry (Robert Forster), and attempts to work up a scheme so that no one will mess with her anymore. The plot may sound conventional, but much of the film's enjoyability stems from the interactions between the characters. Based on the novel Rum Punch by Elmore Leonard, the dialogue ...

The Deer Hunter DVD Review
Advantages: Performances. Disadvantages: Requires your undivided attention.
Perhaps the main reason The Deer Hunter connects with me so much, emotionally, each time I watch it is because it's not really what I would call a "War Film". Opening in the late 1960s, in a small working-class town of Pennsylvania, it tracks three Russian-American steel workers, Michael (Robert De Niro), Steven (John Savage), and Nick (Christopher Walken). The lives of these characters occupy the screen for a large majority of the movie: we see ... ...going on hunting trips into the mountains. The reason the film chooses to focus upon these hard-working people is to show the importance of human bonding; how one chooses to celebrate his life by surrounding himself with friends and family. The Deer Hunter never attempts to make its characters seem flawless; instead, they each are out just to have a good time before they depart to Vietnam with the army. When they meet a soldier at the bar of the ...

CASINO is the Best Gangster film ever made
Advantages: Makes you glad YOU didn't live there then! Disadvantages: nothing really
Bought this on video (but now have it on DVD) when it first came out (in the early 90's) because I have always thought Scorcese is a great director and de Niro a marvellous actor and ever since I periodically watch it.
In my opinion this is the BEST gangster film ever made and it's based on the truth. There again, Scorcese is the BEST Director of this film genre. 'GOODFELLAS' is another great film directed by him, based also on a true story - actually ... ...in the last part of this film was taking place, so it is true!
Robert de Niro & Joe Pesci are ideally paired and the film comes alive with their dialogue, particularly when they remember 'back home, years ago'.
Scorcese's use of contemporary music is outstanding particularly when the action is suspended as a 'still' and appropriate music is played - just mesmerising.
Sharon Stone is also excellent as the glamorous hooker who reluctantly.marries ...

On a Mission
Advantages: Beautiful cinematography and soundtrack, great cast Disadvantages: Little humour
...soundtrack (written by Ennio Morricone). The plot covers the establishment of a Jesuit mission amongst a local native Indian tribe, the Guaranis, in Paraguay in the 18th century. Jeremy Irons stars alongside Robert de Niro as the missionaries meeting the challenges of working with the local peoples, personal demons and the constant threat from the new colonial masters of the region, the Portuguese. The plot is a masterly vehicle for both leading ... ...current imperialism. Other stars dot the cast list - Aidan Quinn, Ray McAnally, Cherie Lungie and Liam Neeson. The film won the Palm D'Ore in Cannes in 1986, follwed by a host of other awards at the Golden Globes and Oscars (including Best Picture and Best Original Score).
This is 126 minutes of engrossing and intensely emotional viewing. ...
