When 'The Aviator', directed by Martin Scorsese, was fist released in 2004 I quite fancied watching it but just never got round to doing so. While ordering some books from Amazon I looked up the DVD and as it was only £1, I added it to my order. In retrospect - I'm glad that it was only £1!! The story follows around twenty tears in the life of the infamous, eccentric billionaire Howard Hughes from his making of his epic ...

Henry V. DVD ... 'Cry God for Harry!'
Advantages: Educational, entertaining and historical. Disadvantages: Iambic pentameter isn't for everyone. Almost no extra features.
Henry V is available on DVD in a 1989 production directed by, and starring, Kenneth Branagh. This is a direct and edgy story about England’s war with France in which the flower of the French aristocracy were slaughtered in the mud of Agincort beneath a rain of arrows from English longbow men.
Derek Jacobi is the chorus who introduces the stage on which this ‘muse of fire’ will burn, and it is a modern one with electric lights and props. I’ve seen ... ...who favoured his company in Henry IV Part One, has now rejected his lower connections and assumed the mantle of royal responsibilities. Derek Jacobi appears on the White Cliffs of Dover to introduce a scene in which three English lords, Scroop, Richard, and Grey, are revealed to be traitors. Henry pretends to be on good terms with them, and then sentences them each to death.
The working class subplot continues with Bardolph, Nym, Mistress Quickly, ...

Great Expectations - The Book
My recollection of the book 'Great Expectations' (by Charles Dickens if there is anyone who doesn't know!) is somewhat hazy, what with GCSEs being 11 years ago and not really paying attention to the book at the time - to be honest I'm not really a fan of Dickens, at least I wasn't at 15. I remember Phillip Pirrip (Pip), Joe Gargery and Mrs Joe. I remember Pip meeting a convict in a graveyard, and being ... ...but beautiful niece Estella. I remember Miss Havisham had been wearing her wedding dress since being jilted at the alter decades before. And, last but not least I remember Magwitch - I mainly remember him because our English teacher who once exclaimed that everything was 'peachy babe' (she was only about 22 and was trying to be 'cool' I think) pronounced his name MagWITCH. There was one incident where the whole class was in absolute fits of laughter ...

Slave to the System
Advantages: Shiny swords! Disadvantages: There's no budget, no script editor and stunningly average acting.
...to have the story of Spartacus told to you with talking pictures, then it's the Kirk Douglas movie all the way. It's got a better script, bigger budget and far, far better actors. There really isn't the faintest need for a remake, especially such a poor one as this. If, however, you can be sold on a good-looking guy strutting about all oiled and not wearing many clothes, and some neat sword-fights (um, so if you're like me then) you might enjoy it, ...

On a Mission
Advantages: Beautiful cinematography and soundtrack, great cast Disadvantages: Little humour
...soundtrack (written by Ennio Morricone). The plot covers the establishment of a Jesuit mission amongst a local native Indian tribe, the Guaranis, in Paraguay in the 18th century. Jeremy Irons stars alongside Robert de Niro as the missionaries meeting the challenges of working with the local peoples, personal demons and the constant threat from the new colonial masters of the region, the Portuguese. The plot is a masterly vehicle for both leading ... ...current imperialism. Other stars dot the cast list - Aidan Quinn, Ray McAnally, Cherie Lungie and Liam Neeson. The film won the Palm D'Ore in Cannes in 1986, follwed by a host of other awards at the Golden Globes and Oscars (including Best Picture and Best Original Score).
This is 126 minutes of engrossing and intensely emotional viewing. ...
