RAY WINSTONE IS STILL THE "F***** Daddy"!
Advantages: The dynamic cast including Ray Winstone and Phil Daniels Disadvantages: If you hate violence of any sort avoid this film!
"Scum" (1979) may now be over 30 years old, but its stunning power, notoriety and shock factor hasn't dwindled! Nor has its wide spread appeal. Films like "Scum" are just simply timeless in their power! This totally harrowing, often stomach-churning drama is a commendably daring (but then again its not really daring when you are merley depicting the truth - no matter how grim or appalling) and unflinching look at life inside a fictious boys juvenile ... ...powerful and completely shocking, "Scum" depicts brutal violence, racial predujice, homeosexuality and sexual abuse in a way that hits you right between the eyes! Not comfortable, easy viewing by any means - almost like sitting on a barbed wire fence its that painfully real. You could easily forget your watching, what is a superbly made drama, and think you were watching a documentary as it has that in-your-face, astoundingly stark effect! You really ...

Scum - the lowest of the low
Advantages: Great acting, poor quality video transfer on the 15 version. Disadvantages: Horrific scenes of violence
Warning contains a partial spoiler
It is with two minds I write this review. In one I found the film facinating in some parts as to see what it was like in prison for young people in times past. However I watched the 18 version of it and I was horrified by the violence in which I saw. I have never seen a film as horrific and graphic as this.
This is basically a film about Borstal Prison and its inmates on one of its wings. It is a film all about ... ...as well as the inmates and other inmates within their own heirarchy. On a basic level this film is well written and the realsitic element makes you almost feel like your there and can sympathise with those who have been incarcerated there - you do develop some empathy for them.
The violence, especially in the 18 version is excessive and graphic, and will put many people off, especially the rape scene, which I found very disturbing and realistic ...

Down to Earh Comedy
Advantages: down to earth comedy, working class background, Disadvantages: weak storyline
This film is based around an economically deprived area of Bradford. The film is built around two schoolgirl babysitters called Sue (Michelle Holmes) and Rita (Soibhan Finneran) who baby-sit for a middle class family; however the husband in the family (GeorgeCostigan) likes to dabble with more than one woman and consequently has an affair with both babysitters. The young babysitters are brought up quickly in this unnatural world and are more interested ... ...the collapse of the marriage between Bob (George Costigan) and Michelle (Lesley Sharp) occurs the friendship of Rita and Sue is put to the test and while Rita moves in with Bob Sue decides to be in a relationship with a fellow colleague at the local Kar Taxi called Aslam (Kulvinder Ghir) she quickly moves in with him and his sister but Aslam does not trust Sue and the relationship quickly turns into a violent one. However due to the comedy way of ...

3 classics NOT for the faint hearted!
Advantages: 3 classics in one Disadvantages: Excessive violence and brutality may be too much to handle for some
Well who ever had the idea to put these 3 films together, some may say needs his/her head examined. These films are 3 of the most brutal and violent films i have ever watched, and i loved everyone of them!
SCUM - this was made in 1978 and released a year after with the intention of a BBC t.v release only. Such was it's success on t.v it was shortly after released onto VHS. At the time the makers were in two minds whether to show this film on t.v ... ...in a borstal following the story of a young offender whos quest is to become "the Daddy" of the institution. The language is coarse and there is quite a bit of racist dialogue which adds to the realism and believeability of the film. The effects are realistic and not over the top, the only scenes of violence in this picture are those of scraps and brawls between inmates really and they are done in a way that show the audience how life must have been ...

WINSTON IS THE MAN....
Advantages: Original and Exciting Disadvantages: Violent
Scum is a hard hitting and realistic piece of film work which, as I'm lead to believe by my Dad, was very controversial when it first came out. It was first released in 1979 (9 years before I was even born!) and is one of my favourites. When I first watched it, it shocked me but also made me laugh. Something which not too many films do but scum excels at.
The film is about Carlin (Ray Winston), an out of control thug, who in his previous prisons ... ...say buy it if you like violent films, if you have seen Scum before but do not own it, then buy this 2 box set as the extra features are really worth watching unlike most other collectors editions!
Thanks for reading and I hope you buy this DVD! Ross. ...
