Water, water everywhere, nor any drop to drink....
Review of The Abyss DVD by
steerpyke
Advantages: -
Disadvantages: -
...giving us Terminator (aliens from the future) and Aliens (aliens in space), in 1989 James Cameron decided to takes his theme to a new location and the setting for Abyss is entirely underwater. Its not a new idea, but out of all the attempts at this type of horror/sci-fi, this is undoubtedly the best. This time however the film is set in the totally recognisable world of the present day and comes complete with a moral message regarding humanity.
... ...of experts and oddballs under the leadership of Virgil "Bud" Brigman played by the excellent Ed Harris. News reaches them that a US submarine has been lost on the edge of an abyss and with a violent storm moving in they are the only place a successful rescue attempt can be launched from. After being joined by a team of navy SEALs and the rigs designer, who happens to be the estranged Mrs Brigman, the storm closes in cutting all contact with the surface. ...

I'll Watch This Again...Maybe Not Today...
Review of Casablanca DVD by
RSH123
Advantages: Great Story, Good Performances, Charasmatic in Black & White, Humourous, Emotional - It's Got Everything!
Disadvantages: None That I Can Think Of
...deals, to try and escape Casablanca to Portugal, where they can then make their way to America and freedom. All this under the nose of a very corrupt Capt Renault, humourously played by Claude Rains.
Rick is an aloof character who maybe dreams of escaping too, but he's doing ok. That is until Ilsa (the beautiful Ingid Bergman) returns to his life. Ilsa accompanies the brave and proud Victor Lazlo (Paul Henreid), who tops the Nazi wanted list. But ... ...their presence? Why does Rick turn to drink...and could he really be that selfish as to turn a man in to the Nazis for his own benefit?
This film had me guessing all the way to the end. It also had me nodding my head going "Ahh NOW I see!" whenever I heard one of those classic lines (some call them cliches but I refuse to see it that way) of which this film gave us so many.
I was captivated by this film. When it was over I thought "Why did it take ...

A nice man with a not-so-nice past
Review of The History Of Violence DVD by
Ayesha-
Advantages: Depends on your kind of film - see review
Disadvantages: Not a well designed plot in my opinion..
Here is one of the last films I rented. I decided to try reviewing it but it turned out to be quite difficult to do! Story
The film starts with two robbers in a car outside a motel. We see that they are so ruthless, they kill every person at the scene of their crimes. The old guy is coming back to the car & says they need more water in that heat. The younger guy returns to the motel they had just robbed to fill up his water bottle, ignoring the ... ...café in his hometown is the next planned victim of their brutal attacks, despite the fact his business could not have much money. His terrified assistant is grasped by the younger robber when she tries to leave. The older robber is just telling the younger one to 'do her' but they are in for a surprise when the owner responds to their attempts to kill his assistant by flooring both of them (possibly killing one), even after suffering an unpleasant ...

"The Ship Of Dreams"
Review of Titanic (Special Edition) by
bigmike33
Advantages: Great drama and emotion
Disadvantages: The script is weak
Intro>>>
When Titanic first came out in 1998 I was rather lukewarm to the hype surrounding the film, so didn't get around to watching it until it came out on DVD. Once I watched it my feelings changed completely, and I fell in love with the film and the romance between the two leads. I really am an old romantic at heart. A lot of people are still angry about this Titanic film, claiming that a great tragedy has been turned into a soppy soap opera, ... ...at the box office figures; Titanic has so far taken a staggering £1.8 billion pounds in the eight years since it has been released, making it the highest grossing film of all time. There have been numerous DVD releases of Titanic, but this four disc special edition is the most exhaustive, containing stacks of extras including an alternative ending.
The Titanic sank back in 1912, and nearly all of us are familiar with the story of it hitting an iceberg ...

Nothing on earth could come between us
Review of Titanic DVD by
EdFearnley
Advantages: A breathtaking spectacle of a film. 11 Oscars, a record breaking piece of movie history.
Disadvantages: Contrived love story, and wooden acting from some of cast.
Your maiden voyage on the Titanic will not end in tragedy. This 3 hour 'titanic' spectacle is the very definition of extravaganza and melodrama in which a traditional Hollywood tale of love and sacrifice has been bound seamlessly with the very finest special effects of it's generation. Although the dialogue and characters can appear slightly clunky and 2 dimensional, it is still difficult not to get swept up in the sheer grandeur of seeing what was ... ...before your very eyes. Everything about this film is huge, the highest grossing film ever, record breaking budget of $200million, winner of 11 Academy Awards and a record of 14 nominations.
Witnessing the last hour of the sinking is a remarkable feat of cinematography, the slow, dripping realisation of the passengers and crew that they are doomed to an icy grave is played out almost in real time. Watching screaming passengers running up the side ...
