When 'The Aviator', directed by Martin Scorsese, was fist released in 2004 I quite fancied watching it but just never got round to doing so. While ordering some books from Amazon I looked up the DVD and as it was only £1, I added it to my order. In retrospect - I'm glad that it was only £1!! The story follows around twenty tears in the life of the infamous, eccentric billionaire Howard Hughes from his making of his epic ...

A Force To Be Reckoned With
Advantages: Very entertaining view of a period of history Disadvantages: ...although its not very factual
...exploring issues issues that Queen Elizabeth faced during her life. The film starts by demonstrating that there is religious and political turmoil between the Catholics and the Protestants in England. Such a powerful turmoil, that it dominants almost every decision that people make. The film illustrates this throughout the film but it is most obvious when it shows the division of the royal family, when Queen Mary asks Elizabeth (her successor) to ... ...England. In a tactical move, Elizabeth says, she will follow as her conscience guides her.
In addition to the political religious turmoil, highlighted is the role of women in society as second class citizens. This is ironic as the monarch is the most powerful being in the country. The division between womens roles is particularly highlighted when her advising counsil keep on pressurising her to marry inorder to produce a heir to secure the throne. ...

'A broken man can heal'
Advantages: Beautifully shot, subtle storyline Disadvantages: Some will find it too slow and possibly self-indulgent
...people that just melt into the background; no-one notices he's there until they have no choice. Craving love, he seeks it with the first woman that comes his way - hedonistic Petal, who has no feelings for anyone but herself. When she leaves him, selling their daughter, Bunny, to an illegal adoption organisation, he is devastated. Fortunately, Bunny is returned to him, but Petal dies in a car accident. Then Quoyle's aunt Agnis comes into his life ... ...a similar background. Is this the beginning of a new life for him and his daughter? Kevin Spacey plays Quoyle, in a role that is very different from his usual, tending towards the over-confident, roles. Perhaps because of this, I think this is his best role. Bullied by his father as a child, Quoyle is a shy man, desperate to find a soul-mate, but lacking the social skills to chose one; instead he ends up with a woman who abuses him physically and ...

Babel A film of great depth that stays on your mind
Advantages: Cleverly directed, well acted, interesting how the stories are connected Disadvantages: A couple of sexual scenes which may unnerve the easily offended
...consequences that can have. Babel is therefore about more than just language or cultural barriers as it deals with the much deeper issue of the isolation of one human being from another, from the strangers we interact with in our daily lives, to our husband or wife, father or daughter. This is one of those films where you understand the beginning only when you get to the end, and this further serves to convey the moral of the film which appears to ...

One Woman's Mistake Is Another's Opportunity...
Advantages: riveting story, fine acting Disadvantages: none
...can't remember how I acquired Notes on a Scandal but it had been sitting on my 'to watch' shelf of DVDs for a while mainly because I didn't really know anything about it. Anyway, last night as my husband was out, I thought I would sit and watch it and I am so glad that I did as it really is an excellent film - and it's British! The film stars Judi Dench as Barbara Covett a crusty old spinster school teacher who is actually very lonely. She has a ... ...of the film meets Sheba Hart, a young art teacher, played by Cate Blanchett. This is exactly what Barbara yearns for but she is not at all pleased when she discovers that Sheba also has a somewhat unhealthy and dangerous ...
