Dan and family welcome you to their world
Advantages: Amusing in parts, musical score, Carell/good cast & performances Disadvantages: plot is a bit too slow/confused - Its not sure if its a comedy or a family drama?
...- Plot -
Dan Burns is a widowed single parent who has to raise three young-ish daughters (Jane, Cara and Lilly). He encounters many problems with them rebelling, as they spend time with his family and try to move on. Away from family life, in Dan's work life, he's a well-respected newspaper columnist who some local people thank him in person for the interesting insights into family life and ways of dealing with typical family problems, that he provides ... ...Parents, in a scene involving Dan having to hide his presence in a room and eventually falling as he attempted to get outside via an unconventional route, put it that way, though its fair to say that there aren't as many of these sorts of visual comedy scenes.
I felt sorry for Dan, given some of the things that happen and his large extended family pursuing for him to move on and find a new partner.
I thought that the film started quite slowly but ...

Keeping it in the Family
Advantages: A warm and fuzzy film that conveys a strong sense of what it's like to have a big family. Disadvantages: Perhaps too many characters to get to know.
Dan is a widower struggling to raise his three daughters. He’s also the writer of a newspaper parenting column trying to come to terms with his bereavement. But when he is visiting his family he meets an incredible woman named Marie in a local bookstore. They instantly hit it off but things are complicated – it turns out she’s his younger brother Mitch’s new girlfriend. The pair must spend the weekend pretending there’s nothing between them, which ... ...lack of privacy. We see Dan trying to have personal conversations on several occasions, but he is always interrupted by other members of his family. One whispered exchange with his brothers turns into a free-for-all and another exchange with Marie sees virtually everyone else in the house trooping through. There are glimpses of sibling rivalry and good-natured ribbing (as with a blind date Dan is sent on). Hedges has a good grasp of the awkward initial ...

Don't Bother Breaking In
Advantages: Some solid perfomances. Disadvantages: Stodgy writing, stolid direction and unlikeable characters.
A series of break-ins at his architecture firm’s new offices in King’s Cross bring Will into contact with fifteen year-old Miro. Will’s investigations lead to him getting involved with boy’s mother Amira, a Bosnian ex-pat who works as a tailor. Meanwhile his home life is no picnic; his wife is prone to depression and her daughter has a compulsive order that has so far defied diagnosis.
“Breaking and Entering” is Anthony Minghella’s third collaboration ... ...yet. It wants to be an insightful and thought-provoking contemporary drama. But instead it turns out a stodgy and self-indulgent bout of upper middle class navel-gazing. It looks slick enough most of the time, with Minghella revelling in the contrast between Will’s glossy Kensington house and the insalubrious environs of his new offices. But there are times when shots swim out of focus. The parkour that opens the movie is decent enough; competently ...

Love will tear us apart
Advantages: Touching love story, beautiful desert scenery, well acted Disadvantages: Very sad, jumps around a bit, perhaps a thinking persons film
...then look no further than The English Patient. I bought the English Patient on DVD at Sainsbury's a few weeks ago. I had just finished the book and thought I'd quite like to see what the film was like. I purchased it in a 3 for £30 deal.
The book I read because it's on my Booker Prize winners list that I'm slowly working my way through this year. I have to be honest, although I liked the idea of it, I didn't enjoy it very much and had to force myself ... ...would like to re-read the book just to see how the director Anthony Minghella managed to create such a masterpiece from the same story I found dull on the page.
Overview of the story
***********************
If you have never heard of The English Patient then the following should help. The story is set at the end of the Second World War, in Italy, and for the most part moves between 1944 and up to two years before hand. The main character is a ...

The unbearable lightness of being, bright moments and boredom
Advantages: beautiful pictures, outstanding acts, good actors, nice music Disadvantages: boring, boring, boring
My story about the movie
A very good friend of mine suggested me to see this movie, she said it was amazing. I promised her to give it a go but for the next 2-3 years I always postponed it and didn’t even bother to purchase a copy. The reason for that was mainly the age of the movie and the fact I couldn’t find it in every supermarket on the “3 for the price of 2” shelves. Finally about 6 months ago I looked it up on amazon.com and placed my order. ... ...Chaplin hat. I truly loved the presentation, but after reading the summary on the bottom of the box I suspected that it was a tragic, revolution-movie, which I didn’t fancy in that very moment, so I placed it on my shelf for another 3 months. On a day I was browsing on imdb when I bumped into the movie again and seeing they gave it the score 7.4 and trusting their evaluation I decided to watch it finally. The opening picture didn’t convince me about ...
