Johnny Depp and chocolate, what more does a girl need?
Advantages: Smooth, soft centred and good to get your teeth in - not fattening. Disadvantages: None
CHOCOLAT
Directed by Lasse Hallstrom
2000
FILM ONLY REVIEW
Before my daughter married and left home, our home housed every single Johnny Depp film ever made, and I do recall watching 'Chocolat' with her several years ago and enjoying it. The film was based on the novel, 'Chocolat', by Joanne Harris, and as I watched the film I realised that I had also read the novel. This film is NOT the 1988 version 'Chocolat', ... ... THE CHOCOLATE IN CHOCOLAT
Vianne's father had travelled to Chile to study herbs and other such vegetation that a old Indian tribe has discovered. While there he fell in love with a young tribe member and eventually marries her. This is where he learnt all of the secrets to these herbs and passed them to his daughter, Vianne Rocher. This magical cocoa plant has powers that you would not believe. When you eat it your deepest desires come true. ...

Love will tear us apart
Advantages: Touching love story, beautiful desert scenery, well acted Disadvantages: Very sad, jumps around a bit, perhaps a thinking persons film
...then look no further than The English Patient. I bought the English Patient on DVD at Sainsbury's a few weeks ago. I had just finished the book and thought I'd quite like to see what the film was like. I purchased it in a 3 for £30 deal.
The book I read because it's on my Booker Prize winners list that I'm slowly working my way through this year. I have to be honest, although I liked the idea of it, I didn't enjoy it very much and had to force myself ... ...would like to re-read the book just to see how the director Anthony Minghella managed to create such a masterpiece from the same story I found dull on the page.
Overview of the story
***********************
If you have never heard of The English Patient then the following should help. The story is set at the end of the Second World War, in Italy, and for the most part moves between 1944 and up to two years before hand. The main character is a ...

Out of the Blue
Advantages: Striking, affecting combinations of music and visuals, strong central performance. Disadvantages: Perhaps a little too blue.
...Binoche), the central character of Three Colours: Blue. The survivor of a car crash which took the lives of her husband Patrice, a celebrated composer, and her young daughter, she desires nothing but to withdraw from life, cutting all ties and bonds that formerly surrounded her. The creation of a Franco-Polish collaboration, and the last project of acclaimed director Krzysztof Kieslowski, the Three Colours trilogy (Blue being the first, White the ... ...three foundations of the French state; Liberté, égalité et fraternité. Reflecting also the French tricolore, Blue deals with an interpretation of Liberty, while Equality and Fraternity are examined in the following films. All three films are self-contained and tell independent stories, although there are threads which run through the trilogy and link up its constituent parts (Julie, for instance, here walks by accident into a courtroom in which the ...

Don't Bother Breaking In
Advantages: Some solid perfomances. Disadvantages: Stodgy writing, stolid direction and unlikeable characters.
A series of break-ins at his architecture firm’s new offices in King’s Cross bring Will into contact with fifteen year-old Miro. Will’s investigations lead to him getting involved with boy’s mother Amira, a Bosnian ex-pat who works as a tailor. Meanwhile his home life is no picnic; his wife is prone to depression and her daughter has a compulsive order that has so far defied diagnosis.
“Breaking and Entering” is Anthony Minghella’s third collaboration ... ...yet. It wants to be an insightful and thought-provoking contemporary drama. But instead it turns out a stodgy and self-indulgent bout of upper middle class navel-gazing. It looks slick enough most of the time, with Minghella revelling in the contrast between Will’s glossy Kensington house and the insalubrious environs of his new offices. But there are times when shots swim out of focus. The parkour that opens the movie is decent enough; competently ...
