~ In the Ring ~

Advantages: Excellent story, Great acting, Interesting settings, Fab characters
Disadvantages: None

~ In the Ring ~ The Wrestler has been released for a while now and this weekend I had a chance to watch it. I have wanted to see this since it was released on DVD but was not too sure if it would be any good. This Friday as my boyfriend was on call we decided to go to blockbuster and rented a few films for the evening. We both had not seen it and thought it looked pretty good. The idea of a film being based around wrestling was a bit of an off put ...
...was younger of the WWF wrestling. I remember sitting watching my favourite ‘The Rock’ and thought that the film could be quite interesting. The plot sounded relatively good and the fact that we have just brought a new tele and PS3 which has surround sound and buy-ray we wanted to test how good it was. The cover is quite simple but effective. It doesn’t give much away and has a sinister picture of Mickey Rourke who plays the man character. You can ...

Sisterly Love

Advantages: Excellent performances and direction
Disadvantages: Not in English language

Juliette Fontaine has just been released from prison after serving a fifteen-year sentence. Her younger sister Lea comes to take her to her own family home. Lea is married to Luc and they have two adopted Vietnamese daughters; Luc's father, who has suffered a stroke, also lives with them. How will Lea's family react to Juliette, who has to stay with them until she has a permanent job and can support herself? And how will Juliette cope with her return ...
...into contact with, who react in different ways to her crime? The nature of Juliette's crime is revealed gradually, but her reason for committing it is not evident until the end of the film. Suffice it to say that Juliette's parents denied her existence after she was sentenced, and they forbade Lea to write to or visit Juliette. Lea, however, never forgot her sister, and the bond between them forms the essence of the film. She trusts Juliette implicitly ...

Lewd and Lurid in Barcelona

Advantages: Fab cinematography, great performances from Cruz, Bardam and Rebecca Hall
Disadvantages: All a bit lewd and lurid

...very seductive indeed. Vicky (Rebecca Hall), is a sensible young girl, engaged to Doug (Chris Messina), who has an air of practicality about him but at the same time is hazardous. Vicky is a student studying Catalan culture so when she gets an invite to visit Barcelona from her rich friend Judy (Patricia Clarkson) and her spouse, Mark (Kevin Dunn) she jumps at the opportunity as she thinks the visit will help with her M A thesis. Vicky takes along ...
...art, gastronomy and sex. Prudent Vicky rebukes him but Cristina mocks her for her beliefs and accepts. And so the main questions in the film are : Is it better to behave like Vicky, loving one man and believing in marriage or like Cristina who is lustful and just out for excitement and adventure? In Woody Allen's film, both these female characters are doomed. Allen seems to portray women as easy targets, negative, fickle and capable of making mistakes ...

Ok but could have been better

Advantages: Excellent acting by the youngest children
Disadvantages: Skewed view of India, cliched characters

...of obstacles on the way). Slumdog does exactly the same so the theme is as old as the hills. From an Indian perspective, it makes me sad that the only view of India the West really gets is the poverty. I'm not denying that there are millions of people who live in unspeakable poverty in India but then there are millions who don't. The slum scenes are accurate but why is every Western film about India about the slums? A straw poll at work revealed ...
...his work, the music of Slumdog isn't half as good as his earlier work in films like Roja and Dil Se and many others. I didn't hate the film - but I just wanted to write this to point out that it is very clearly a film made by a British director for a Western audience. It may be set in India, but it isn't Indian. Just as a contrast, the film The Namesake or even the unknown American film Outsourced, depict India in a far more balanced, nuanced, subtle ...

Rourkes Drift

Advantages: Great lead turn
Disadvantages: Wrestling in general.

...come club. He was paying the bongo drums and smoking a cigarette that didn't look like normal ones (could have been menthol!). I said hi and shook his hand, complimenting him on Angel Heart and asked if he still had the stunning Lisa Bonnets number, which, in his drunken state and mock Lord of the Manor English accent, bizarrely produced (which I wasn't brave enough to ring!). He then continued banging the drums with a pleasant smile on his face ...
...until his head plopped on the said bongo and he fell asleep, but still smoking that cigarette. I think it's fair to say Mickey has lived the life. They say you get the face you deserve at 40, a face that was punched fairly heavily in the 90s as he turned his back on Hollywood and went on to be a professional fighter for a spell, and unbeaten in 8 fights no less. Well he is New York Irish American after all, one that wears an IRA tattoo and gave to ...
