An emotional rollercoaster
Review of Babel DVD by mackry

Advantages: Gripping throughout
Disadvantages: Noot for everyone's taste, needs time dedicated to it

...every one of them. Babel is also the winner of the oscar for best picture in 2007, and similar in many ways and themes to the 2006 winner, Crash. The name of the film comes from the biblical story of the Tower of Babel - a tower built so that people could get closer to god. Biblical and religious questions are continuously raised throughout the film. Babel certainly isn't for everybody's taste. There are four stories interweaved between different ...
...a car with him! Babel also put me off ever visiting Morrocco, or if you do you wouldn't want to do anything wrong going by the portrayal of police brutality. Don't go to see this if you want something to switch off to. There are no big explosions and all the drama comes from real life situations. What I love about Inarrito's films is that he can inadvertently switch from a moment that truly touches your heart, as happens at the first switch between ... Read review

Review of A Beautiful Mind DVD by Morning_Becomes_Electra

Advantages: A beautiful film of a true story.
Disadvantages: Some may find the subject distressing.

A BEAUTIFUL MIND Released in 2001 and starring Russell Crowe. This film falls into the genre Biography/Drama, and is loosely based on the biography of mathematician John Forbes Nash, written by Sylvia Nasar. Directed by Ron Howard, and for which he received an Academy award for Best film of 2001. The film chronicles the life of highly regarded mathematician John Forbes Nash Jr, who throughout his life suffered from paranoid schizophrenia. ...
...between sanity and madness, lies a very fine line, and the main protagonist shows us with great clarity just how fine a line this can be. Genius in one form or another can tip the scale between the two. The mind is a mysterious, and delicate object, as I myself found when studying for my degree. You can only push yourself so far before something gives, and intense commitment to one subject can all too easily result in complete mental breakdown, and ... Read review

Babbling on...
Review of Babel DVD by afy9mab

Advantages: Somre very strong performances.
Disadvantages: Some wishy-washy characterisation and lack of plot.

When an American tourist is accidentally shot in the Moroccan desert, the events have repercussions around the world. The holidaying couple struggle to survive in a country where few speak their language. A Mexican nanny is forced to take two American children over the border illegally. Two young boys get involved in a crime they didn’t intend to commit and a deaf teenage Japanese rebel discovers her father is being sought by the Tokyo police. Circumstance ...
...of loss and isolation. Separated by culture, language and a lack of understanding of their surroundings and themselves, they all struggle to connect with the world. Like Robert Altman before him, director Alejandro González Iñárritu is fixated on the multi-strand narrative format that links several stories through a single event. It can be a very effective storytelling tool but it can fall flat on its face. This particular example is moderately ... Read review

Review of Romeo And Juliet DVD by Sammyantha2k

Advantages: Makes it easier to study
Disadvantages: Bit silly at times

...& Despair. Tragedy & Love. Romeo & Juliet. ·´`·.¸.»(*) This film is a modern day version of William Shakespear's classical Romeo and Juliet were we see the play set in present day with guns replacing swords etc. The 1996 version is directed at a much younger audience and as a teenager I agree that in some ways it does help you understand the story. For anyone whos never read the orginal play, it is set in fourteenth century Verona, Italy. There ...

Everyone is haunted by their past
Review of A Beautiful Mind DVD by shister_not

Advantages: Absolutely everything
Disadvantages: Quite sad, can make you question your reality

A Beautiful Mind is film that can be described, simply, as beautiful. A beautiful Mind is based on the novel by Sylvia Nasar of the same title. Both mediums tell us about the life (mainly college onwards) of the great mathematician, John Nash. We are firs introduced to Nash on his first day of Princeton University. From this moment on, the audience sees the majority of the film through John’s eyes. He isn’t the most social character but gosh, he ...
...human initially manage to form a rapport with is his roommate Charles, who is the opposite of John; loud, humorous, outgoing. Following the outline of a plan to impress some ladies, John established a concept that would later be known as his Equilibrium theory. As a result of this outline, John is given the opportunity to work for Wheeler labs as a code breaker. Due to John’s talent, he is approached by a more secretive individual to find codes hidden ...
