Sense and Sensibility plus extra features = great item
Advantages: What extras there are complement the film well Disadvantages: Might only appeal to a specific audience, few extra features
I can't fault the technical quality of this DVD - the menus are straightforward and easy to operate, although the one confusion I always have is whether the audio commentary option is switched on or switched off. The menus look elegant and in keeping with the marketing material used by the film, but things like this could be clearer, in my opinion. The sound and picture quality is excellent - sometimes there is a mismatch (even on TV) between the ... ...that the volume level you thought you needed is suddenly deafening, but in this case that problem doesn't apply - and in spite of the five year gap between film production and DVD, the picture never looks washed-out (as is sometimes the case). I have rated the special effects in this case as average - although I have picked up from background research that some scenes required a rain machine, because it is a period film, there is little need for ...

When 'The Aviator', directed by Martin Scorsese, was fist released in 2004 I quite fancied watching it but just never got round to doing so. While ordering some books from Amazon I looked up the DVD and as it was only £1, I added it to my order. In retrospect - I'm glad that it was only £1!! The story follows around twenty tears in the life of the infamous, eccentric billionaire Howard Hughes from his making of his epic ...

Teenage bumps
Advantages: Witty, sweet Disadvantages: Teenage sarcasm sometimes gets a bit too much
Sixteen year old Juno falls pregnant after one-time sex with her friend Bleeker. She considers the possibilities - having an abortion, having the baby or adoption, and decides on the latter. Along with her father, she pays a visit to an infertile couple, Vanessa and Paul, wanting to adopt, and decides that they are ideal for her baby, particularly as Paul's taste in music appeals to Juno. She decides to go ahead with the adoption, based on the premise ... ...as the pregnancy develops, and Juno gets to know Vanessa and Paul much better, could she change her mind and decide to keep the baby? Juno is played brilliantly by Ellen Page. Ellen really seems to embody a typical teenager, complete with sarcastic comments and, as so often happens, once she finds out she is pregnant, she does take responsibility and makes decisions about her future with remarkable maturity. At the same time, glimpses of the teenager ...

Legendary (American Beauty (DVD))
Advantages: Excellent acting, directing, storyline...the list goes on! Disadvantages: none
...just now waking up...' American Beauty tells the story of Lester, played by the legendary Kevin Spacey, who wishes to break free of the norm of 'keeping up appearances', his wife Carolyn Burnham (Annette Bening) is so obsessed with. Annette represents the disillusioned being, who has lost sight of what he/she wants in life and believes that happiness is represented by material things and how 'in order to be successful, one must project an image of ... ...profound, as he decides to follow his hearts ambitions, to look young and feel excited, is highly comical. He continually lusts over his daughter Jane's (Thora Birch) friend Angela (Mena Suvari), as she represents his personified goal of youth and being spontaneous. Lester in his outrageous quest for happiness produces a few timeless one-liners, not least the opening scene: 'Look at me, jerking off in the shower... This will be the high point of ...

Chilling!
Advantages: Excellent special effects, gripping Disadvantages: Story leaves much to be desired
When water temperature in the North Atlantic begins to drop significantly it would appear to be a warning of things to come, or at least that’s what Professor Jack Hall (Dennis Quaid) thinks. He tries to convince the government that there is a natural disaster on the way but they refuse to believe the theories of a climatologist. Suffice to say Jack is right and soon after, horrendous weather hits the world, engulfing it with water and snow and when ... ...death on the spot. While this natural disaster is occurring, Jack’s son Sam (Jake Gyllehaal) is in New York for a competition with a few friends, when the weather worsens they’re forced to take shelter in a public library and Jack promises to rescue his son… but will he be too late?
The Day After Tomorrow is another in a long line of disaster movies with a purpose of playing on peoples sense of reality and paranoia. Much like Armageddon portrayed ...
