'It comes after 12, Hon'
Review of Apollo 13 (Wide Screen) by Smiley_Scarly

Advantages: Amazing cast, true story
Disadvantages: No proper ones really

...(the on the original Apollo 13 mission). The cast includes Tom Hanks (Jim Lovell - astranaut on Apollo 13), Kevin Bacon (Jack Swigert - astronaut on Apollo 13), Bill Paxton (Fred Haise - astronaut on Apollo 13), Ed Harris (Gene Kranz -flight control), Gary Sinise (Ken Mattingly - astronaut supposed to fly on Apollo 13, but did not) and Kathleen Quinlan (Marilyn Lovell - Jim's wife). Running time is approximately 140 minutes. Rated PG. It's an ...
...interested in it. So, when Apollo 13 came along, no-one paid much attention (you see this in the film) until it went wrong, when the world became gripped by space flight once again. The characters: Jim Lovell is a great character and takes the lead in the film. He, Jack Swigert and Fred Haise together make the film great, along with Gene Kranz and Marilyn Lovell. Many space films, in my opinion can be fairly boring, as there are a lot of technical ... Read review

A Rich and Decadent Film.
Review of Chocolat (Wide Screen) by phoenixgreen

Advantages: Wonderful cast, great storyline and so rich in human observation.
Disadvantages: You'll want to watch it again, even if you don't have time!!

Chocolat - A Richly Decadent Film! There are some films which seem to be designed entirely to relax our minds, soften our souls, and allow a little comtemplation on the constant flux of life. This, I am happy to say, is exactly one of those films. So utterly French that you expect it to be subtitled (though it is not) and so gentle and flowing that you feel as though you are submerged in a warm and scented bubble bath for the most part of the film, ...
...be cast over this sumptuous and almost edible film. The story is of a woman (Vianne, played by Juliette Binoche) and her daughter (Anouk, played brilliantly by the young Victoire Thivisol), and her daughter's pet kangaroo (yes, that's right, kangaroo...) The story tells of their way of life, being blown (quite magically) from one place to the next at the grace of the North Wind, to spread the knowledge of the ancient Mayan secrets of cacao. Bogart at his best
Review of The Maltese Falcon DVD by sunmeilan

Advantages: Superb dramatisation of the book
Disadvantages: None

...isn't missing one. Even worse, the police think that Sam may have something to do with the murder of his sister and a man called Joel Cairo threatens him at gunpoint. Eventually, he works out that what everyone is getting worked up about is a statuette called the Maltese Falcon, given to Charles V of Spain by the Knight Templars of Malta - people will apparently pay anything to get hold of it and Brigid appears to be the key. Will Sam help them find ...
...based on a book of the same name by Dashiell Hammett. Although this is not the only film of The Maltese Falcon that has been made, it is, as far as I and many a film buff is concerned, the definitive version, with Humphrey Bogart giving his arguably best performance ever. As Sam Spade, Bogart is a character of several layers. At first glance, he is as unpleasant as some of the criminals he chases - he sleeps with his partner's wife and is apparently ... Read review

A gun-shooting Mother Teresa in the Wild West...
Review of The Missing (Wide Screen) by anya_lahiri

Advantages: Superb plot, spectacular performances, a mixture of genres.
Disadvantages: The first 45 minutes are a bit slow and hard to get into.

...Whilst only having £1 and the desire to watch a film, at my local DVD rental store I had to go for something that wasn't a 'Top Title.' This caused me to have to rummage the shelves for something half-decent. I came across 'The Missing' the title suggested to me that it might fit the genre I was looking for and so I embarked to read its description on the blurb. It was here that I decided to give it ago, also seeing the notable star cast. I had briefly ...
...pleasantly surprised that the film was different to my expectations. Brief Overview -------------------------- This film is set in the 19th century (1800s). The beginning starts with a family of a woman and her two daughters who live in New Mexico. Maggie Gilkeson is the mother who is also a 'healer' this is someone we would know today as a doctor. She leads a relatively humble life and tries to do the best for her children. However, due to her ... Read review

New Mexico to Old Mexico we go.
Review of The Missing (Superbit) by craggsy23

Advantages: Believable story, touching to the end.
Disadvantages: Occasional subtitles.

...It is based on the novel, 'The Last Ride', by Thomas Edison, it is set in New Mexico in 1885. Maggie Gilkeson or Magdalena as she is often referred to, is a cattle rancher and single mother of 2 daughters, Lilly and Dot. Maggie is also the local 'healer' for Mexicans and neighbours around her. Out of the blue, her estranged father, Samuel Jones, appears at the ranch on the guise of looking for medical help. His motives are however to attempt a ...
...it clear from the off though, that he is unwelcome and after his 'treatment' for a torn muscle, Samuel reluctantly leaves the ranch. The following day, the two ranch hands leave to go cattle branding and take Lilly and Dot along for the ride. Brake Baldwin, one of the ranch hands who is also Maggie's sort of boyfriend, promises to be home by dusk. When the party fails to return, Maggie spends an anxious night on the porch awaiting their return. ... Read review
