We live in the Shadowlands

Advantages: Briliant Acting, Beautiful settings, Compelling Storyline
Disadvantages: Very sad

How can it be that some of the greatest stories of the 20th century were written by academics? In Oxford in the 1950s two great series of books were born and brought before an unsuspecting public. There was Tolkien's 'Lord of the Rings' with its (in my view) overblown mythology, and there was also the Narnia books, a series of compelling stories for children written by an English lecturer, Clive Staples Lewis, an eminent scholar and theologian. What ...
...that he was a confirmed bachelor, living with his brother in a small cottage on the outskirts of Oxford. The story of Lewis' life is well documented, especially in the book 'Shadowlands', which in the mid 1980s was dramatised by the BBC into a film starring Joss Ackland and Clare Bloom. In 1993, Sir Richard Attenborough made the story into a film starring Anthony Hopkins (he wasn't a 'sir' then) and Debra Winger. The film is around 2 hours long, ...

Smile, when your heart is breaking...

Advantages: Great performance from Robert Downey Jr
Disadvantages: Feels rushed

Charles Spencer Chaplin was born in London in the late nineteenth century to music hall entertainers. Soon Chaplin himself realised the potential of the stage, realising he could earn himself a perfectly good living. By 1914, he was living in the States and was fast becoming a household name for his character, a gentleman tramp known simply as 'The Tramp'. He eventually moved into film production too, although he continued to star in his films. But ...
...very public paternity suit against Chaplin which he lost, although blood tests proved he was not the father of the child. And Chaplin's political views frequently got him into trouble - in fact, he was eventually kicked out of the United States during the McCarthy era. Thankfully, a happy final marriage and a peaceful life in Switzerland meant that his life ended without too many other traumas. I must admit I would never have thought of Robert Downey ...

Gandhi

Advantages: read opp
Disadvantages: read opp

...the fight, dedication and determination Gandhi had to secure the countries independence. The film is both moving and very informative, its slow paced but that's the purpose of the film, its both dramatic and so powerfully moving. The film was a true appraisal of the life and legacy of Mahatma, it showed his beliefs, his coriage, power and determination to fight for a just cause. The film was brilliantly directed by Attenborugh, and is lead by a very ...
...known figure. We see how Gandhi gets assisnated during an evening walk in the garden, being shot by a young man and then shouting out "Oh God" before he dies. The film then rewinds back to the early moments of Gandhi's movement for freedom. We don't get to see his childhood or any aspect of his parental life etc, it moves straight into the pivotal moment were Gandhi is thrown off a train in South Africa, because he was travelling in first class. ...

Sex and the City

Advantages: funny, great performance
Disadvantages: long

...so many exciting reviews on Sex and the City that I decided I watch it. It is a real chick flick romantic comedy and that evening it was the perfect entertainment for me. The film was written and directed by Michael Patrick King. Actually he was the co-producer of the film as well with Sarah Jessica Parker and Darren Star. Michael Patrick King is an American film director and screenplay writer. Besides Sex and the City he wrote the screenplay of ...
