Altman does British Costume Drama to Perfection
Advantages: A really good film with a great cast Disadvantages: None
Gosford Park is an old fashioned English film made by one of the great American auteurs of the twentieth century, Robert Altman. It has a huge array of acting talent involved and was released in 2001 to critical acclaim, at the time it won best original screenplay at the Oscars as well as a Bafta for the Best British Film, it was also lauded as a return to form for Altman whilst Julian Fellowes received similar praise for his script. Ok so that's ... ...Set in 1932, Gosford Park is a wonderfully elegant English country estate. Sir William McCordle (Michael Gambon) and Lady Sylvia McCordle (Kristen Scott Thomas) gather their closest friends and relations for a weekend shooting party. The film follows the various eclectic guests who have come for the weekend as well as the staff during this hectic weekend. The film is a comedy of manners and class, it has elements of farce and sex, as well as a murder. ...

Lightning In A Bottle....
Advantages: Enthralling, simply Enthralling Disadvantages: Not Much Really
The Joffrey Ballet Company of Chicago is one of the most highly regarded dance schools in the world, build on hundreds of dancers determination, sweat, blood and tears it has managed to stay at the top of its game for over thirty years. The Company is an in-depth and heartfelt look into the lives of those who makes this the establishment that it is, mainly the movie centres around Ry a beautiful, up and coming dancer, who is steadily building her ... ...work as a waitress at the local sleazy nightclub. Whilst at a pub, playing pool she meets a young and handsome chef, Josh and starts a whirlwind romance. Neve Campbell really does deserve a lot of credit for this movie, she (although already a respected dancer) trained for seven months, eight hours a day to get to a stunning level technically, is credited as writer and producer and puts in one of the most compassionate and wonderful performances ...

Gould strikes gold
Advantages: A radical and thoughtful re-imaging of the 40s detective Disadvantages: A flim that demands attention in order to be enjoyed
...Altman who also made M*A*S*H, The Player and Short Cuts amongst other films. Altman is not an action director, preferring verbal sparring to physical jousting and I'd recommend that anyone sitting down to watch this film be in the mood to pay attention and listen carefully - it's not popcorn entertainment and that isn't a criticism.
The Long Goodbye is based on a Raymond Chandler book of the same name and stars Chandler's most famous creation, Philip ... ...of whom projected variations on the same theme of a smart, tough and handsome 1940s detective but no one comes close to portraying the character the way that Elliott Gould does. Marlowe has undergone a radical re-imaging and emerged as a mumbling slob in the 70s. This caused outrage among many Chandler fans upon the film's release but Altman defended his vision, claiming that he had tried to imagine the character as having 40s sensibilities transported ...

An ensemble film
Advantages: Great cast Disadvantages: none
...having made numerous films, however Short Cuts, which was released in 1993, is an interesting idea for a film.
Short Cuts is a collection of about twenty different characters in Los Angeles, in loosely connected stories, which revolve around relationship problems and death. It essentially follows the day in a life of these characters as they cross each other paths. No one is really the lead star, as each actor gets about equal time on screen. The ... ...Julianne Moore, Jack Lemmon, Matthew Modine, Robert Downey Jr, and Frances McDormand.
I think that this is a fantastic film that really works well. Altman does a good job getting all these big actors to share time on screen, with no egos getting in the way. I would say that Tim Robbins and Jack Lemmon give the best performances in this film. You might find it a little confusing to begin with trying to follow the many characters, but by the end of ...

Satire of Hollywood
Advantages: Story and stellar cast Disadvantages: none
...satire film on Hollywood, called The Player, featuring an all star cast. The Player is about a ruthless and successful Hollywood executive, Griffin Mill (Tim Robbins), who is used to getting what he wants. However he fears that a writer, whose script he rejected, is blackmailing him. However a case of mistaken identity leaves Mill with a difficult situation to clear up that could cost him more than his job.
This film satirizes the politics and sleazy ... ...producers, who all play themselves. The film looks at how Hollywood sometimes favours commercial success over quality at the expense of quality artists.
The supporting cast features Fred Ward, Greta Scacchi, Whoopi Goldberg, Peter Gallagher, Richard E. Grant, Sydney Pollack and Dean Stockwell who are all give great performances. Tim Robbins is brilliant as the executive Griffin Mill and manages to portray the arrogance and greed of an executive ...
