Upstairs or below stairs?
Review of Gosford Park DVD by sunmeilan

Advantages: Agatha Christie-like
Disadvantages: Too many characters

Introduction As soon as I heard about this film, I knew it would be right up my street. Described as a murder mystery, it is set in a stately home in 1930s England. With a large number of famous actors and actresses, including Maggie Smith, Kristin Scott-Thomas, Helen Mirren, Charles Dance, Stephen Fry and Clive Owen, it couldn't really go much wrong. And I wasn't disappointed, well, not too disappointed anyway - it takes a while before any action ...
...it's a must-see for anyone that enjoys crime fiction by writers such as Agatha Christie. The director Robert Altman, who came up with the idea for the story, along with Bob Balaban, was born in Kansas in 1925. He has written, directed and produced a number of films, although the majority of them are not particularly well-known. He is probably best-known for directing Alfred Hitchcock's TV show and writing the script for MASH. The plot Sir William ... Read review

Do a Runner
Review of The Kite Runner DVD by afy9mab

Advantages: It's an interesting story...
Disadvantages: It's melodramatic, dull, poorly acted by the leads and clumsy.

...his childhood friend's son. Under the iron rule of the Taliban, his journey is fraught with danger, but it is the only way he can face the past that still haunts him and set things right. Director Marc Forster is well known for his thoughtful personal portraits of loss and regret, having previously helmed the likes of "Monster's Ball" and "Finding Neverland". Both films were characterised by a gentle touch and a deep understanding of the characters. ...
...of time and place; in the flashbacks the fashions are unmistakably 70s and the locations fit with what I've seen of the region. This is contrasted by the bright colours of modern-day America and the bleached-out colours of Afghanistan under Taliban rule, which primes you for a bleak snapshot of life. He makes the differences between the social status of the two main Afghan tribes crystal clear (Pashtuns are generally secular, rich and educated while ... Read review

Review of The Lost City DVD by kiran8

Advantages: A very artistic film

This very controversial film about the crisis faced by an upper middle-class Cuban family during free Havana's last days was directed and produced by Andy Garcia. The film was a tribute to his native Cuba.Garcia , the son of a Cuban immigrant , played the lead role too. This was an acclaimed big-time film which was 16 years in the making. The film when released was ripped apart by the critics, who was criticised for distorting facts about the Cuban ...
...critic "In a movie about the Cuban revolution, we almost never see any of the working poor for whom the revolution was supposedly fought"..many film festivals refused to screen it.However, withstanding all that it went on to become one of the great movies made on Cuban revolution, with many claiming that it was a true depiction. Criticisms apart, the film is very interesting and extremely well made. It is the story of Fico Fellove (Andy Garcia) ... Read review

A woman of courage
Review of Carve Her Name With Pride DVD by sunmeilan

Advantages: Fascinating story, brilliantly portrayed
Disadvantages: Some will find it painful to watch

Violette is an ordinary woman working on a cosmetic stand in London during the war. Her mother is French and has brought Violette up to speak the language fluently - this comes in handy when she meets and falls in love with Etienne Szabo, a French soldier. Sadly, after Violette has a baby girl, Etienne is killed in battle. Then Violette is approached by the Government and asked to become a spy for the British war effort, largely because of her fluent ...
...soon sent out on a series of missions, during which she is captured by the Germans. Will she ever return home to her daughter? And will her training enable her to keep quiet about British official secrets? I have always had an interest in films that portray women during the war - I think their efforts to keep the country running is sadly underestimated, and some, like Violette Szabo, put themselves on the front line. This is a true story, Violette ... Read review
