Gandhi
Review of Gandhi DVD by jaygami1986

Advantages: read opp
Disadvantages: read opp

...the fight, dedication and determination Gandhi had to secure the countries independence. The film is both moving and very informative, its slow paced but that's the purpose of the film, its both dramatic and so powerfully moving. The film was a true appraisal of the life and legacy of Mahatma, it showed his beliefs, his coriage, power and determination to fight for a just cause. The film was brilliantly directed by Attenborugh, and is lead by a very ...
...known figure. We see how Gandhi gets assisnated during an evening walk in the garden, being shot by a young man and then shouting out "Oh God" before he dies. The film then rewinds back to the early moments of Gandhi's movement for freedom. We don't get to see his childhood or any aspect of his parental life etc, it moves straight into the pivotal moment were Gandhi is thrown off a train in South Africa, because he was travelling in first class. ... Upstairs or below stairs?
Review of Gosford Park DVD by sunmeilan

Advantages: Agatha Christie-like
Disadvantages: Too many characters

Introduction As soon as I heard about this film, I knew it would be right up my street. Described as a murder mystery, it is set in a stately home in 1930s England. With a large number of famous actors and actresses, including Maggie Smith, Kristin Scott-Thomas, Helen Mirren, Charles Dance, Stephen Fry and Clive Owen, it couldn't really go much wrong. And I wasn't disappointed, well, not too disappointed anyway - it takes a while before any action ...
...it's a must-see for anyone that enjoys crime fiction by writers such as Agatha Christie. The director Robert Altman, who came up with the idea for the story, along with Bob Balaban, was born in Kansas in 1925. He has written, directed and produced a number of films, although the majority of them are not particularly well-known. He is probably best-known for directing Alfred Hitchcock's TV show and writing the script for MASH. The plot Sir William ... Read review

Lest we forget!
Review of Charlotte Gray DVD by Spongebob2

Advantages: A timely reminder of what could have been
Disadvantages: Don't expect an action packed film, but do expect to be enlightened

Charlotte Gray, based on the real life exploits of British women spies who were sent to France during WW2 is a clever film. It is not just about one person (Charlotte Gray) although she is centre stage, it covers the fear and double dealing which were rife in France at that time, shows how the people helped each other as a way of life rather than out of duty and most of all gives you a feel for the danger that they put not only themselves in, but ...
...very cleverly aired “The Real Charlotte Grays” immediately before it. This programme spoke to former women spies who had been in France sending back information and blowing up trains etc – giving their real life experiences. They spoke of the humility they felt when they realised that at worst they would be caught and shot, but the French people were risking everything, their own lives, that of their families and their livelihood. This was a good ... Read review

Hope springs eternal
Review of Charlotte Gray DVD by sunmeilan

Advantages: Interesting take on the ordinary lives of people during WW2
Disadvantages: Changes in accents make it difficult to follow at times

When Charlotte Gray meets and falls in love with a young airman, Peter, she should have her entire life to look forward to. However, it is World War 2 and her fiance very soon goes to France on a mission and goes missing. Determined not to give up hope, Charlotte applies for the Secret Service and is sent to France herself; ostensibly to help the war effort, but also to try and find out what has happened to Peter. Will her personal feelings get in ...
...Cate Blanchett was great as Charlotte Gray. She has a gentle, ethereal beauty that lends itself perfectly to this sort of role - a brave, but nevertheless human, woman in love. I liked the way that her character was shown to be infallible - all too often stories about the war concentrate on the bravery, but don't show the fear behind it all - yet Charlotte is clearly scared out of her wits at times. She is supposed to be Scottish, and speaks with ... Read review

Powerful, compelling, vibrant, moving
Review of Amazing Grace DVD by lobourse

Advantages: Great performances, wonderful screenplay, tight directing
Disadvantages: It can only cover so many aspects

Amazing Grace is a film which documents phases of the struggle of William Wilberforce to bring about the abolition of the slave trade in the British Empire. The film was released to coincide with the 200th anniversary of the passage of the Anti-Slave Trade Act in 1807. It has a British director, British screenwriter and a predominantly British cast (one of the main parts is played by an African actor). = SYNOPSIS = The film opens in 1797, ...
...the author of the hymn Amazing Grace, he is shaven headed, dressed in sackcloth, mopping the floor of a church. Such is the power of the performance, that Finney totally captivates the audience, and you can well understand that Newton was a mentor to the young Wilberforce. Finney is utterly compelling and completely convincing, especially at the end when he has lost his sight. Sir Michael Gambon - Lord Charles Fox. Gambon's character begins the ... Read review
