musical genius
Review of Ray DVD by nebcsa17th

Advantages: Great soundtrack
Disadvantages: Sad how it all came together for Ray

...of classic artist such as Ray Charles not even Hollywood would like to darken his name to much. The man was a genius and the film only confirms what all his fans already know. It lays heavy on the different worlds that he lived in, one on the road and one with his family at home. The film gives you a rough idea of the hardship of keeping them both seperate. Ray Charles was an outstanding artist for his time and not even the problems of the Americans ...
...is amazing how these brilliant artists come up with ideas for their songs. Ray Charles was a gifted and talented musician and even though i have seen this movie more times than i care to mention i have still got to get around to buying it, But i will. ... Read review

Houston, There is No Problem!
Review of Apollo 13 (Wide Screen) (Special Edition) by elfbwillow

Advantages: Brilliant Story and Great Cast
Disadvantages: Some real emotional parts

...two academy awards in 1995, Apollo 13 is in no doubt a wonderful film for all ages, (although PG Certified!) *****Film Overview***** Imagine Entertainment presents an amazing film produced by Brian Grazer, which is made even more electrifying in this two-disc special edition. Ron Howard directs and amazing cast, which includes Academy Award Winner, Tom Hanks, alongside Kevin Bacon, Bill Paxton, Gary Sinise and Ed Harris, providing an all star cast ...
...company which designed the original Apollo space crafts to give it just that little bit extra on accuracy and make it, if possible, even more believable. Although a lot was extremely accurate, there has been some critisism on just how accurate it is, but thats film folks! Everything in film is dramatised! *****DVD Overview***** Bothe picture (2.35:1 Widescreen) and sound (Dolby Digital) were perfect. I had no qualms at all with either, and was ... Read review

Loyalty to country or family?
Review of Notorious DVD by sunmeilan

Advantages: Superb performance by Ingrid Bergman
Disadvantages: Quite slow to begin with

Introduction Just in case you haven't noticed, I'm a big fan of Hitchcock films, particularly the psychological thrillers, and although this film does not quite fit into that category, it is still a strong story directed by a master. Those of you who don't like to watch older films like this because they are black and white and old-fashioned don't know what you are missing. There may not be the special effects of today's films, but there is superb ...
...rarely seen today. And when they're free with newspapers, like this one, there's no excuse really. The director Although Alfred Hitchcock made his best-known films while in Hollywood, he was born in the East End of London and spent the first part of his career in the UK. When he finally moved to the US in 1940, he was already a well-known director, with films such as The Thirty-Nine Steps and Sabotage under his belt. The plot Alicia Huberman's ... Read review

Men Like Love Stories Too
Review of An Officer And A Gentleman (Special Edition) by sghawken

Advantages: Compelling multi-layered movie
Disadvantages: The packaging

...admit to I know, but An Officer And A Gentleman has been one of my favourite movies for a good many years. I first saw the movie back in 1983, and although I skip a few years in between viewings it’s a movie I watch again and again! Why do I enjoy the movie, I hear you cry? For me it’s the mix of genre’s; primarily the movie is a romantic movie, but at its heart it’s a movie about Navy trainees preparing to go out and fight for there country. This ...
...of Helen Mirren; claims that An Officer And A Gentleman is a movie aimed more for the male audience. Its themes are close to many a mans heart, the need to be the “alpha male”, the desire to succeed, the love of a good woman, or in some cases the love of a bad woman. Hackford describes the movie as a mans love story. Richard Gere plays the part of Zach Mayo, although he was by this time an established actor his part here spring boarded himself into ... Not just a glossy costume drama
Review of The Madness Of King George DVD by JOHNV

Advantages: First-rate acting, attention to period detail, moving but with moments of light relief
Disadvantages: References to bodily functions might be a bit too much for the squeamish (see review)

...Alan Bennett, later adapted for the cinema. The author admitted in his preface to the play that ever since his schooldays he had always had a soft spot for King George III, and his sympathy comes through strongly in this poignant, sometimes satirical, occasionally funny tale of his first bout of madness. The action takes place in 1788-89. King George (Nigel Hawthorne) has been on the throne for nearly thirty years. Despite a less than stellar track ...
...own domestic life until, at the age of fifty, he is troubled by severe abdominal pains. Soon he starts to behave irrationally, rising early and running across the fields in his nightshirt, failing to remember names, becoming aggressive towards his family and making improper suggestions to Queen Charlotte (Helen Mirren)'s lady-in-waiting, Lady Pembroke (Amanda Donohoe). The incompetent doctors are at a loss as to what to do, beyond the odd bout of ... Read review
