Babbling on...
Review of Babel DVD by afy9mab

Advantages: Somre very strong performances.
Disadvantages: Some wishy-washy characterisation and lack of plot.

When an American tourist is accidentally shot in the Moroccan desert, the events have repercussions around the world. The holidaying couple struggle to survive in a country where few speak their language. A Mexican nanny is forced to take two American children over the border illegally. Two young boys get involved in a crime they didn’t intend to commit and a deaf teenage Japanese rebel discovers her father is being sought by the Tokyo police. Circumstance ...
...of loss and isolation. Separated by culture, language and a lack of understanding of their surroundings and themselves, they all struggle to connect with the world. Like Robert Altman before him, director Alejandro González Ińárritu is fixated on the multi-strand narrative format that links several stories through a single event. It can be a very effective storytelling tool but it can fall flat on its face. This particular example is moderately ... Read review

The Piano
Review of The Piano DVD by silvajade

Advantages: A great film to watch, a very emotional film which is gripping to watch..
Disadvantages: none

The film, The Piano, is a film that tells a story about a young woman’s journey from oppression to freedom. The main character, Ada McGrath (Holly Hunter), is sold off in marriage to marry Alisdair Stewart (Sam Neil) and is thus sent away from her home to New Zealand. She is accompanied by her 9 year old daughter, Flora (Anna Paquin) and her beloved piano. When Ada arrives on the beach of the New Zealand coast she is dressed in black dress ...
...provides a stark contrast with the vast backdrop of the crashing sea and grey skies. Ada has not spoken ever since her lover was killed by lightning. She communicates through her piano and sign language, understood by her daughter. The way in which she uses the piano reflects her mood in a very strong and clear manner. Understandably is then enraged when her new husband refuses to take the piano because it is too too heavy. The piano is rescued by ... Read review

2 great films to watch over and over!
Review of Moulin Rouge / Romeo And Juliet (Double Pack) (Wide Screen) by rlfcuk

Advantages: 2 fantastic dvds in a set!
Disadvantages: Would get more extra features if bought seperately.

...electricity, you're left feeling breathless. Moulin Rouge is a beautiful story, with a great cast, vibrant settings, and memorable songs. Nicole Kidman really shines in this character. I admit I had to watch it a few times to understand the story completely, as there is so much going on you can get distracted! But after watching a few times over, I really appreciated what a classic love story it tells and still end up in tears at the end! Romeo ...
...play. Although the actors still speak the sames words from the written story, it is set in modern times. I watched this many times whilst doing my GCSE's and it helped me understand the text. I found it quite amazing that although Shakespeare wrote the play many centuries ago, the message is still relevant in todays times. I think both of these films are must for anyone who likes love stories, music, good acting, and most importantly, great movies! ... Read review

musical genius
Review of Ray DVD by nebcsa17th

Advantages: Great soundtrack
Disadvantages: Sad how it all came together for Ray

...of classic artist such as Ray Charles not even Hollywood would like to darken his name to much. The man was a genius and the film only confirms what all his fans already know. It lays heavy on the different worlds that he lived in, one on the road and one with his family at home. The film gives you a rough idea of the hardship of keeping them both seperate. Ray Charles was an outstanding artist for his time and not even the problems of the Americans ...
...is amazing how these brilliant artists come up with ideas for their songs. Ray Charles was a gifted and talented musician and even though i have seen this movie more times than i care to mention i have still got to get around to buying it, But i will. ... Read review
