Gandhi
Review of Gandhi DVD by
jaygami1986
Advantages: read opp
Disadvantages: read opp
...the fight, dedication and determination Gandhi had to secure the countries independence. The film is both moving and very informative, its slow paced but that's the purpose of the film, its both dramatic and so powerfully moving. The film was a true appraisal of the life and legacy of Mahatma, it showed his beliefs, his coriage, power and determination to fight for a just cause. The film was brilliantly directed by Attenborugh, and is lead by a very ... ...known figure. We see how Gandhi gets assisnated during an evening walk in the garden, being shot by a young man and then shouting out "Oh God" before he dies.
The film then rewinds back to the early moments of Gandhi's movement for freedom. We don't get to see his childhood or any aspect of his parental life etc, it moves straight into the pivotal moment were Gandhi is thrown off a train in South Africa, because he was travelling in first class. ...

Bad Education
Review of Bad Education DVD by
Cristina.M
Advantages: Amazing storyline
Disadvantages: in Spanish with subtitles (although that is an upside to some)
This is an amazing film, maybe one of the best by the great director Pedro Almodovar. Gael Garcia Bernal's performance is outstanding. The film is funny yet dark and takes you on a great cinematic journey. The story is amazing and you will not be satisfied until you see the end. Although the film deals with many serious issues such as drugs and child abuse, Almodovar is able to being comedy to the whole recipe. The film is in the original Spanish ...

Eyes wide shut
Review of Blink DVD by
christianfilmcritic
Advantages: Good concept for a thriller
Disadvantages: It's become very dated
...pace.
The director of Blink is Michael Apted (Extreme Measures) and in general he has made a decent attempt at making a reasonable thriller. He has done a good job of how Emma has enhanced senses such as hearing, he does this through simple things like a stool being pushed across the floor makes a very clear noise. Where I feel the film is let down is by the sometimes over the top love scenes. I personally believe Apted was trying to compete with ... ...that, a lot of thrillers from the late 80's and early 90's seem to have over the top sex scenes. The soundtrack for the film is also very typical of the era, with plenty of saxophone pieces and use of synthesized sounds. On top of this there are some very good pieces of folk music which reminds me of the band The Levellers.
The film was written by Dana Stevens who went on to write the screen plays for "City of Angels" and "For Love of The Game". ...

Great Hollywood Send-Up
Review of The Player DVD by
ThePolarOne
Advantages: Good central story. ‘In’ jokes. Cameos.
Disadvantages: Slow, relying heavily on characters.
...now wormed his way into the studio. The word is Griffin is on his way out. To add to this pressure, Griffin has been receiving a number of threatening postcards. He thinks they are from a writer he rudely brushed off some months previously. Deciding to confront him, he pays the writer a visit. The meeting goes very badly and when the writer shows up dead the next day, Griffin is high on the suspect list.
The Player is a great send up of the entire ... ...is like. W e see the exterior of Griffin’s Hollywood studio, the camera dips back and forth between numerous key and superfluous characters, of which there are many of each. The camera rolls up to the window of Griffins office to hear movie pitches being made, The Graduate part 2, “it’s Ghost meets The Manchurian Candidate.” There is star name dropping and movie references, such as a nod to Orson Wells Touch of Evil (1958) and how its six-minute ...

Biopic of a legend
Review of Chaplin (Wide Screen) by
paulb22
Advantages: Stunning performance by downey jr, great cast,
Disadvantages: Concentrates a little to much on Chaplins private life
...I have been a Charlie Chaplin fan (and a fan of silent comedies in general) since i bought Chaplins masterpiece Modern Times, when i first bought this film, i was wondering how could someone possibly portray Chaplin on screen, but Downey Jr pleasently surprised me.
The story follows Chaplins (Downey Jr) rise to stardom starting of as a stand in singer and dancer when his mother (Geraldine Chaplin) is booed of stage, to his final years in exile in ... ...scene when Sennet doesn't think Chaplin is who he really says he is, and Chaplin is forced to perform his famous drunken man routine, this persuades Sennet that Chaplin is the real deal, also at this point we see another famous scene where Chaplin picks out his famous costume. under the direction of Sennet Chaplin also clashes with Mabel Normand (Tomei). After working with Sennet Chaplin branched out on his own, and decided to direct himself, Chaplin ...
