"Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo?"

Advantages: Breathtakingly beautiful
Disadvantages: None

...Leonard Whiting, just 17, as Romeo and Olivia Hussey, a mere14 as Juliet. This makes them more or less the actual ages of Shakespeare's characters. I thought that both Whiting and Hussey were superb actors (even at their young ages) and they play well off each other. These roles were debut ones for both young actors. Having two young, attractive actors playing the lead parts did attract a lot of younger audiences. I was a teenager at this time and ...
...Apocethary scene explains just where Romeo got his poison and the fight with Paris explains the Prince's "brace of at your discord", these were both omitted from the film. Despite the missing parts of the play, Zefferelli uses the rest of the script so well and creates a story full of pathos. The sets, the costumes, and the cinematography are bright and colourful, and not only the young lovers, but all the cast exuded youth. This cast of the film ...

Shiny Happy People

Advantages: A colourful and good-natured 60s film with some good music.
Disadvantages: The film is corny and dated and contains some terrible acting.

There are few periods that have come to symbolise the divide (real or imagined) between young and old more than the late 1960s. The reasons for this are varied, but chief among them is surely that rebellion was done en masse rather than in dribs and drabs, as had been the case in times previous. And it was, of course, all very visible on TV. That's not to say that all young people rebelled - most probably didn't, not in any real sense, though most ...
...these time that were a changin' - it's just that those who did rebel made such a noise doing so that it still echoes in our ears forty years later, though much of what was said and done at the time by rebelling yoofs has long since morphed into cliché: flower power, love-ins, happenings, 'turn on, tune in, drop out', 'make love, not war', 'give peace a chance', etc, etc. Such easy-to-swallow bite-sized counter-culture chunks were all that most ...

"you'd think after eight of them they'd stop opening the door"

Advantages: Some good acting especially from Curtis
Disadvantages: A bit dated

THE BOSTON STRANGLER This is a ‘Film Only’ review of the film – ‘The Boston Strangler’ released in 1968.There is what could be called a spoiler in this review, but when you watch the film, you realise that I am not spoiling anything for you, it will become fairly self explanatory. Somehow I had never seen the film starring Henry Fonda, Tony Curtis and George Kennedy. I was a bit of a wimp back then and probably thought that the 18 rating ...
...another case of ‘nothing on the telly’, left me looking through Sky Anytime for something to watch and decided to give the old film a watch. When the film was first released it was very controversial. It was directed by Richard Fleischer and produced by Richard F. Zanuck for Fox. It was one of the first R rated films in America - the same as our 18 .By today’s standards it would certainly be no higher than a 15, it contains a tiny bit of nudity, ...

Malcolm McDowell's Dark Horse Debut In If...

Advantages: engaging cast; wit; intriguing story
Disadvantages: dark tone and ending maybe; mixture of color and b/w

I’ve never thought so much about a movie before as I have 1968’s If…, directed by Lindsay Anderson. After buying it for $19.99 from moviesunlimited.com because it’s so hard to find and not on DVD, I watched it five times over the past five weeks and kept putting off this review. You might reflect that this over-familiarity with the film gives me a decided advantage in understanding its strengths and weaknesses, but I’m not so sure. I’m not British. ...
...States (the movie takes place in a British boys school). And this is 2004, about thirty-six years after the movie was released. While it was controversial and shocking back then, as well as very popular with rebellious, young Brits, it now seems mostly to be an amusing, though dark, trip back to the 60s…but is it really only that? If… begins director Anderson’s very strange trilogy that continues with O Lucky Man and Britannia Hospital, the latter ...

Would You Swim Your Way Home Across a County?

Advantages: Burt Lancaster
Disadvantages: None really

...when he looks out across the neighbouring properties and decides to swim across the county via the swimming pools of his various neighbours to his home where his wife and two daughters await him. Along the way he meets various friends and acquaintances as well as some people who are barely civil to him and some who are blatantly rude to his face. Merill also comes across some young and mature women who he seems to be on more than friendly terms with. ...
...This is one of the most eerie films I've seen in a while - Burt Lancaster as the middle-aged Ned Merill turns in a fascinating performance in the lead role. We see him dressed in a pair of swimming trunks throughout the film (and in one scene ahem even less that that)! It's a good opportunity to see his finely toned muscles and fabulous sun tan but I digress - that is certainly not the reason to watch this film. You feel on edge from within the first ...
