Pure class
Advantages: Sidney Poitier Disadvantages: None
...the best films I've seen in a long time. The film won an Oscar for Best Picture in 1967.
The plot
A senior police officer specialising in homicide, Virgil Tibbs, is passing through a small town on his way home to Philadelphia when he suddenly finds himself dragged to the local police station and accused of the murder of an important businessman. The only reason for the locals' suspicion of him is that he happens to be black. Eventually, after much ... ...is requested by his boss in Philadelphia to stay on and help the Chief solve the crime. The Chief is not happy that the "nigger" as he calls him has to stay around and does his best to persuade him to leave, but the wife of the murdered man, impressed by Tibbs' investigating skills, demands that Tibbs stays. Tibbs has the intelligence, but the Chief has local knowledge and - it is soon clear that the Chief cannot work without Tibbs and that Tibbs ...

Newman as charismatic as ever.
Advantages: Great scenario, oustanding acting performance.. Disadvantages: Absolutely none for me
...**********************
Luke Jackson aka Cool Hand Luke is sent to correctional jail in 1948 (prisoner number 37) but intends to live his life as he pleases, not willing to conform to the prison rules, he escapes (several times), he wants to be free, because he wants to see his dying mother, he escapes simply because he doesn't belong there, he is a free spirit.
A strong relationship will build between the inmates, the strongest of all with Dragline ... ...and that my friends is Cool Hand Luke. I think this is exactly how the director (Stuart Rosenberg) wanted it ... if not, the final result is probably better than he ever expected because this 2 hour movie makes you feel for the main character in many ways...funny, charming, cool, brilliant, painful are all adjectives you will go through when watching this prison drama.
Moreover this movie is one of the great films about the carceral environment ...

An apple for the teacher?
Advantages: very moving film Disadvantages: none!
To Sir, With Love' has to be one of my favourite films of all time and I have watched it more times than I can remember. If I ever feel in need of uplifting, watching this film on DVD is sure to leave me with a feel good feeling!
The film, which is based on the novel by E R Braithwaite, tells the story of Mark Thackeray, played superbly by Sidney Poitier, an out of work engineer from British Guyana, who takes a temporary job in a tough secondary ... ...fifteen year olds just waiting to leave! No other teacher has managed to last the distance with them, and when Mr Thackeray first enters the classroom he is faced with sullen demotivated young people who are not prepared to give him a chance. He takes all sorts of flack as he attempts to teach them in a conventional way, with nothing seeming to work. He is almost at the point of giving up on them himself, something he desperately does not want to ...

Mouchette: Poverty Personified
Advantages: Unprofessional actors give the film a real documentary feel, deeply moving Disadvantages: No extras to speak of in this Dvd which is a real shame
Mouchette is a 1967 French film directed by Robert Bresson, starring Nadine Nortier, and Jean-Claude Guilbert and based on a novel by Georges Bernanos. Now I have not read the book so I could not tell you whether the cinematographic adaptation remains faithful to the text or not . However, what is sure is that Bresson did not merely intend to adapt the literary text onto the screen, his film goes beyond merely retelling the story of a poor girl. ... ...is met with countless tragedies. Mouchette (Nadine Nortier) lives in an isolated rural village with her alcoholic father who beats her and terminally ill mother. She is forced to take care of her infant brother and do all of the housework. Things do not go better for her at school where Mouchette is mocked by both her classmates and teacher. I do not want to give too much detail about the rest of the story in order to avoid spoilers, especially as ...

The Original Belle de Jour
Advantages: A classic of French cinema Disadvantages: Challenging at times
...I would say that Belle De Jour is one of Buñuel's most accessible films. His other films being less linear and more experimental. It is a long way from his avant-garde classics - Un Chien Andalou and L'Age d'Or. Although at times the film evokes a dreamlike quality, Belle de Jour is set very much in the real world. The film is full of elegance and this is perhaps most expressed in the careful attention that has been given to the costumes, settings, ... ...symbolism behind the movie. Although Belle De Jour is erotically charged and deals with some disturbing subject matter that some might still find shocking, there is no explicit sex in the film. It is a film that appeals to our love of mystery and how the mind is drawn to interpret art in a specific way. In Belle de Jour, Buñuel challenges this desire by maintaining a sense of ambiguity to the very end of the film. The film typifies Buñuel's obsession ...
