The Passion of the First Evangelist
Advantages: It is a real and sincere film Disadvantages: Some silent moments, something in the soundtrack, and the devil
...[the more accurate translation is The Gospel According to Matthew; not Saint Matthew]
►►► "Then two robbers were crucified with him, one on the right and one on the left." ◄◄◄
At a certain point in WAITING FOR GODOT, Vladimir ponders on the fact that only one of the Evangelists [Luke] mentions that one of the thieves was saved; whereas both Mark and John don't mention the thieves at all, and Matthew even says ... ...Saint Luke? Why most of the adaptations are based on the gospel according to Saint Luke? Each of the four gospels has a special characteristic: Matthew aims at proving that Jesus was the promised Messiah, Mark concentrates on the miracles, Luke, who was a doctor, provides the longest and most detailed gospel, and John prefers to focus on the spiritual side of the "story". (These are simply the general features in each one; discussing the differences ...

If you love life, you will love Alexis Zorba
Advantages: Quinn as Zorba is irrestible, great music and dance Disadvantages: a rather sedate storyline.
Zorba the Greek is not the greatest story in the history of cinema, its claim to fame lies in the impressive performances of Anthony Quinn and Alan Bates. Above all, it is memorable for its unforgettable score by Mykos Theodorakis and excellent black and white cinematography.
The plot is quite straightforward: Basil, a shy, rather introverted and mannered Englishman with Greek connections inherits a disused mine on the island of Crete. On the mainland ... ...Basil takes a shine to Zorba and takes him on as the hired help.
The contrast between the reserved, inhibited Basil and Zorba's lust for living life to the full is one of the main themes of the movie.
The pair arrive on a Crete far removed from the developed island of the 21st century. This is a rather backward place of peasant culture and widows in black weeds, the kind of Greece you can only see nowadays if you stray far away from the usual tourist ...

'Humility is hard on the knees...'
Advantages: Great film Disadvantages: Slim on DVD extras
...Canterbury, not far from where Becket was murdered/martyred. Becket became a folk hero, a canonised saint, and the stuff of myth and legend, as useful in politics as in literature – Chaucer’s famous pilgrims telling their Canterbury tales were on their way to the same location as Henry II paid his penance for the death of Becket.
The idea of the separation of church and state is an admittedly modern invention, but even in Becket’s time, the intertwining ... ...up a background rivalry for Becket and Henry II while they are both on the same side (Henry II appointed Thomas Becket as his chancellor, a position not dis-similar to being his first, or prime, minister). When Henry decided to take control of the church by appointing his own man as the Archbishop of Canterbury, Becket then has what some have described as a road-to-Damascus conversion experience – the film follows this interpretation.
‘Honour is ...
