More than met my Expectations

Great Expectations - The Book
My recollection of the book 'Great Expectations' (by Charles Dickens if there is anyone who doesn't know!) is somewhat hazy, what with GCSEs being 11 years ago and not really paying attention to the book at the time - to be honest I'm not really a fan of Dickens, at least I wasn't at 15. I remember Phillip Pirrip (Pip), Joe Gargery and Mrs Joe. I remember Pip meeting a convict in a graveyard, and being ... ...but beautiful niece Estella. I remember Miss Havisham had been wearing her wedding dress since being jilted at the alter decades before. And, last but not least I remember Magwitch - I mainly remember him because our English teacher who once exclaimed that everything was 'peachy babe' (she was only about 22 and was trying to be 'cool' I think) pronounced his name MagWITCH. There was one incident where the whole class was in absolute fits of laughter ...

Charming Story and charming performances
Advantages: Great Set pieces, great performances Disadvantages: Sometimes a little over-English
...Hunter) and what ensues is a brief but tender conversation that sparks romance. My some miracle Peter survives and is found washed up the shore. He then seeks to track June down and court her. this is however not how heaven intended - Peter was supposed to be dead but due to a mishap they forgot to collect him -and they send an angel to collect him. Peter refutes this claiming that because of their mishap he has now fallen in love and demands an ... ...also incredibly enjoyable. Niven gives a fantastic performance as Peter. His stiff upper lip never wavers and he is suave and charming throughout. Real treats are the sets here, which are astounding and ahead of their time. Earth is filmed in glorious Technicolor and heaven in black and white. As was sometimes the trend with Technicolor, they have really gone for it with a wide and dazzling colour palette. Not to be outdone, heaven has some incredibly ...

Portrait in Scarlet
Advantages: Great story brought to life by spot on performances. Disadvantages: The film print is fuzzy in places.
...As a result of this Scarlet Street became one of the most successful Universal films of the mid 1940s.
The acting is uniformly brilliant in this movie. Edward G Robinson performance as Chris Cross is convincing as the timid middle class man sucked into a world of lies and duplicity. Unlike his performances ‘Little Caesar’ and ‘Key Largo’ here his short squat frame is used to portray a person who is powerless and vulnerable to forces greater than ... ...by his wife to such an extent that he now wears an apron. Chris only overcomes his repression in an almost sexual violent outburst. He is unable to cope with the consequences and is finally reduced to living as a tramp. Joan Bennett is great as ‘Lazy legs’ Kitty. She is corrupt and trashy but also alluring throughout the film and it’s easy to see why men keep falling for her. This was her third performance for Lang in movies which also include wartime ...

Leave Her To Heaven
Advantages: Great central performance, Gene Tierney, Disadvantages: A slightly weak supporting cast!
...say chocolate box ; ' Leave Her To Heaven ' is one of the stand out womens pictures of the 40's.
Gene plays ' Ellen ' who possessed of her fanatical desire for her husband , played by Cornel Wilde , is driven to commit murder because of her jealousy.Becoming frustrated by wildes addiction to the typewriter ( he's a writer ) and his unobtrusive family ,she drowns his younger brother in a lake which eventually leads to her having a miscarriage and ... ...remorse.
Visually ' Leave Her to Heaven ' is a feast for the eyes and the smooth direction of John M Stahl is great. Although somewhat expressionless throughout ' Tierney ' conveys a wonderfull sense of underlying evil beauty with her icy stare and strangely flat persona. The settings are really splendid too ranging from the New Mexico deserts to the icy lakes and fir forests of the American North. To sum up. a very glossy and entertaining melodrama ...

While I'm proud of my service, I must stipulate that the road to now was at equal times grim, sorrowful, and emotionally exhausting, to say the least. Very few people in my family had served in the armed forces; my father was going to join in the 1970s but was rejected because he had flat feet. My sister was able to complete 3 years in the Marine Corps, and she joined ...
