GONE WITH THE WIND (1939) DVD (2006) "There was a land of Cavaliers and Cotton Fields called the Old South. Here in this pretty world, Gallantry took its last bow. Here was the last ever to be seen of Knights and their Ladies Fair, of Master and of Slave. Look for it only in books, for it is no more than a dream remembered, a Civilization gone with the wind." The opening words of Margaret Mitchell's "Gone With The Wind" I ...

Gone with the wind

Advantages: lavish dated drama with endless detail, finery and spectcle
Disadvantages: too long, over done , too many tricks for the viewer

This epic is big in every sense of the word. It is a blockbuster to end all blockbusters. The light and shade of the intense colour sometimes overwhelms the speeches in each scene. Can you spot where Clark Gable isnt dancing? Can you spot the civil war scene where humans werent used? The film has various effects and tricks to keep you going through the extended viewing time. It is a marathon of eye candy and with every part polished to shine ...

...knock at the door of Wuthering Heights." WUTHERING HEIGHTS FILM 1939 ...DVD 2004 Anyone who has been reading my recent reviews may have noticed that I have been indulging in a lot of nostalgia by watching DVD's of all my old favourite classics. My latest purchase from Amazon for the grand price of £3.24 was the 1939 'Wuthering Heights' adapted from Emily Bronte's classic novel. This was the first film dramatization of Emily Bronte's ...
...No surprise then that Wuthering Heights only received one Oscar for best cinematography. In Laurence Olivier's illustrious 60-year career, the Oscar nomination for his role as Heathcliff was the first of ten Oscar nominations he received (He won one, Hamlet, 1948) THE FILM Emily Brontë's classic Gothic novel is one of my favorite books, so I could find some faults with the film if I wanted to be picky but the positive aspects of Wuthering ...

JAMAICA INN “Oh Lord, we pray thee Not that wrecks should happen -but if they do happen- Thou wilt guide them to The Coast of Cornwall For the Benefit of the poor inhabitants” Introduction ‘Jamaica Inn’ is one of Alfred Hitchcock's films and probably one of his least typical works. The film is taken from the Daphne du Maurier book, adapted for the screen by Alfred Hitchcock. Made in 1939 it was after this film that he was enticed ...
...third The Birds in 1963) Jamaica Inn was the last film Hitchcock would make in England under British control and the production company, Mayflower Pictures was the company owned by Charles Laughton, the star of this film. It is worth remembering when criticising this film that it was made only 10 years after sound was introduced to motion pictures. Cinematography The film includes some great atmospheric cinematography courtesy of Bernard ...

Foul play at Highbury

Advantages: ***
Disadvantages: ***

Don't let the title put you off right away. This is not a film totally about football, it's a murder mystery that has a football theme and backdrop, in this case Arsenal's world-famous (and soon to be vacated) Highbury Stadium Arsenal were not only the most successful British football team of the 1930s, they also had a couple of other claims to fame from that decade; in 1933 they had an Underground station named after them, and in 1939 they found ...
...veteran Thorold Dickinson, taking the chair for his first feature film, adapted from the book of the same name by Leonard Gribble. The story is based around a charity match played at Highbury between Arsenal as themselves, and mighty amateur side The Trojans. Several of the Gunners' 1939 first team, as well as then boss George Allison and trainer Tom Whittaker, get to display their acting ability. It's safe to say that footballers then were no better ...
